Implements processes for coding operations that support the needs of other healthcare partners. Additionally, Medical Records Coding Manager develops and maintains up-to-date knowledge of the latest ICD and CPT coding versions and ensures coders receive updates and training on classification or guideline changes. Is a certified medical coder and the exact type of coding certification may vary based on the clinical setting or a medical specialty focus. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, a related field, or equivalent. Depending on the setting typically requires the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification. May additionally have the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) credential. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Medical Records Coding Manager supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions. To be a Medical Records Coding Manager typically requires 3-5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. Thorough knowledge of functional area and department processes.
The Medical Record Coding Certificate program is designed to prepare health information professionals who focus on medical record management with an emphasis on procedural and diagnostic coding for reimbursement of professional services performed in healthcare facilities.
The program includes medical terminology, human disease process, pharmacology, medical billing, procedural and diagnostic coding and medical records regulations.
Upon successful completion of the Medical Record Coding Certificate program, the student may be eligible to take the certification examinations administered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and/or the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
The Medical Record Coding Program has limited enrollment and students are admitted annually in the fall semester.
Acceptance into the health information management courses is contingent upon students completing the MRCO application form and submitting it to the Medical Record Coding Program Manager.

Maintain records and statistics to include quality control measures, CCE reporting, accuracy of coding, workload completed and ad hoc reports as required.

Knowledge of medical terminology and usage, including general medical, surgical, pharmaceutical, hospital terms and abbreviations and abstracting techniques.
Two years of coding experience required, with surgical coding and professional billing experience preferred.
Maintain a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease processes and surgical techniques through participation in continuing education programs to effectively apply ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding guidelines to inpatient and outpatient diagnoses and procedures.
