About Your Role

The Nursing Unit Manager (NUM) is in-charge of all aspects of the unit environment and takes overall responsibility for the standard of patient care in the unit. The NUM is pivotal to the coordination of patient care, unit management and leadership to ensure the delivery of high quality patient care and efficient use of resources.

Key NUM Responsibilities Include

  • Liaison with all health care disciplines for the provision of services to meet patient needs.
  • The orchestration of services to meet patient needs after discharge, such as monitoring catering and transport services.
  • The implementation of hospital and health service policies.
  • The dissemination of relevant information to all personnel.
  • Ensuring environmental safety, including monitoring the use and maintenance of equipment, the supply and use of stock and supplies and cleaning services.
  • The direction, co-ordination and supervision of nursing activities, training, appraisal and counselling of nurses, rostering and/or allocation of nursing staff.
  • Development and/or implementation of new nursing practices according to patient needs.
