How will I help?
The Senior Data Engineer will be part of Westpac International, Financial Markets Technology Team. This role can be based in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane and will require the candidate to attend the office twice a week.
The Market Risk Application Program is implementing a new market risk solution for APS116 – Market Risk in the Trading Book. An in-house capability is being development as part of the program to hold data from the new risk system and provide data models and data preparation for: reporting of market risk exposures; reconciliation to the trading systems and to the legacy market risk system; to calculate Value at Risk (VAR) and related measures, to perform VAR Back testing; and to enable users to calculate further aggregate risk measures. This same capability will also be used to perform data-transforms on data feeds to and from the new Market Risk system.
FM Technology team requires an increase in technical leadership and development capability to oversee this complex application and building domain knowledge & IP to increase solution design capability, transition support knowledge & capability to partners and internal teams, and hands on developments as per business requirements.
Responsibilities will include:
Technical Specialism:
- Data Engineering / Development
- Python / PySpark
- Palantir Foundry
- Ability to write optimised code for the processing of large datasets
- Propose solution options for larger pieces of work end to end.
- Technical and Operational documentation
- Problem solving skills
Adherence to Organisational Framework and Processes
- Perform hands on work and lead, the technical activities across the Software Development Lifecycle within Agile projects.
- Participate in sprint planning, with a keen eye for detail of critical path delivery through the various milestones to Production.
- Be a gatekeeper of quality and ensure coding standards and patterns are implemented.
People management:
- Provide leadership to a small, professional team of technical specialists in teams of diversely located resources.
- Work closely with other in-house teams who develop and support on Palantir Foundry.
- Actively encourage professional development and innovative practices
- Provide feedback to management of resource challenges, to help ensure the right people are performing the right roles. Make suggestions for improvements.
Stakeholder Management:
- Develop strong relationship with L2/L3 support team (on and offshore) to manage Operational support requirements.
- Develop relationships with other Technical Leads in the broader team to gain insights and share experiences.
- Develop strong relationship with Scrum Master to become leadership team in the overall team.
- Develop strong relationship with Business team and SMEs to understand the business context.

What do I need?
To be set up for success in this role, you will be able to demonstrate:
- 10 years’ experience within the IT Industry, specialising in data engineering design, coding, and development.
- 5 years’ experience in Python
- 5 years’ big data platforms
- PySpark experience is highly desirable
- Palantir Foundry is high desirable
- 5 years’ experience leading a team of Developers (on and offshore)
- Financial Markets and/or Market Risk banking experience is desirable
- Experience in Agile Teams.
- Tertiary qualifications in Information Technology or a related discipline
