About the role
Location: ALS Environmental, Calgary
Reports to: Metals & Soil Supervisor
About the Position:
This position is responsible for the determination of a wide range of inorganic parameters in water samples and soil extracts employing a variety of analytical instrumentation.
Specific Responsibilities
- Prepare reagents, calibration, quality control standards, duplicates and spikes;
- Instrument calibration, trouble shooting and maintenance;
- Operation of ICPMS, ICPOES and Mercury Analyzer CVAAS;
- Data analysis and data reporting of ICPMS, ICPOES and Mercury Analyzer CVAAS;
- Method development and method validation;
- Filtration of samples for various tests;
- Glassware - preparation and cleaning;
- Organise workload to meet Turn Around Times (TAT’s);
- Query a work list of samples, creating work groups or digestion batches, printing lists of comparison data, and data transfer into LIMS;
- Calibration and use of pipettes;
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment;
- Follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) requirements, deviations must be approved by Supervisor or Manager;
- Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
- Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail;
- A highly motivated and cheerful attitude and strong work ethic;
- Excellent English communication skills (written and verbal);
- Excellent computer skills;
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team;
- Demonstrated ability to work to deadlines.
Required Qualifications
- Completion of diploma or degree in chemistry or related field;
- Experience with ICP-MS, ICP-OES and Mercury Analyzer would be an asset.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs./14 kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;
- Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
- Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;
- Ability to stand for a full shift;
- Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
- You may be exposed to unpleasant odours;
- Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.
