Support Staff Full-time Appendix D Contract Position (Immediately – August 30, 2024)
The Career Advisor advises students and International graduates on a broad spectrum of career-related issues with the goal of yielding optimal post-graduate employment outcomes aligned with programs of study. The Advisor coaches students on building their career readiness competencies through work-integrated learning opportunities, the Co-Curricular Record (CCR), paid employment, volunteering, etc. The Incumbent supports activities, events, projects and initiatives designed to enhance the quality, capacity and sustainability of career services in strategic areas of interest.
Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through a hybrid work arrangement with three days on-site, and two days remote.
Responsibilities:
Using a holistic, student-centred approach, advises current students and International graduates through individual appointments and drop-in services at all campuses within established service delivery parameters
Fosters student career readiness and supports students in building career management skills
Advises students on a broad spectrum of career-related issues
Coaches students on building their career readiness competencies through the Co-Curricular Record (CCR), on/off campus employment, volunteering, recreational or leisure activities, etc
Develops and delivers career services programming such as workshops, presentations, demonstrations, etc
Collaborates with Student Affairs service areas and other internal stakeholders to co-develop and co-deliver programming as required
Refers students to other College services (i.e. International office, Credit Transfer office, Accessibility Services) for assistance when appropriate
Supports activities, events, projects and initiatives designed to enhance the quality, capacity and sustainability of career services in strategic areas of interest which may include: student/graduate employment outcomes; International student/graduate success; diversity and inclusion recruitment; competency development; on campus student employment; and the Career Peer program
Researches tools and resources that can inform service delivery for specific student populations
Utilizes Outcome (MyCareer Portal), UniHub (Student Success Portal), the Student Information System (SIS), and online platforms such as Career Coach/EMSI Analyst to gather and analyze College/student data and labour market information
Prepares summaries, reports and presentations for internal stakeholders
Develops resource materials (print, digital) to support career related initiatives
Uses social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) to promote career services and events, and to engage with internal/external stakeholders
Educates employers about student competencies and recommends on campus student engagement opportunities such as job fairs
Refers employers to the MyCareer portal and assists with posting job opportunities as appropriate
Supports Career Services programming, events and activities such as career/job fairs, information sessions, networking events, etc
Works collaboratively with the Campus Manager and their campus colleagues to provide clear, responsive and consistent customer service that minimizes the need for further navigation and enhances overall service quality, capacity and sustainability
Qualifications:
Three year diploma or degree in Business, Human Resources, Social Sciences, or related discipline
Minimum of three years practical experience in employment and career advising in a post-secondary or employment services environment
Strong customer service orientation supported by a firm commitment to diversity and inclusion, and student retention and success
Demonstrated capacity to model flexibility/adaptability and successfully manage change in response to evolving post-secondary, industry, employer needs and expectations
Knowledge of Conestoga’s programs and services, the regional and local labour market, industry/employment trends, and best practices in student engagement and recruitment
Well-developed coaching and active/reflective listening skills with awareness of the challenges and barriers to employment often faced by International students, aboriginal students, and students with accessibility and mental health concerns
Knowledge of the Canadian/Ontario Human Rights Act, Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, and employer/employee rights and responsibilities
Previous workshop development and facilitation experience with an understanding of adult learning principles
Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication and presentation skills coupled with professionalism, tact and diplomacy
Robust computer and technical skills to effectively leverage digital career services tools and resources, and develop, curate and share career services information via print, digitally and through social media
