Custom Biologicshas an exciting opportunity for an PhD trained scientist to join our Scientific Innovation and Research Group in Toronto, Canada.

We are a Health Canada audited, GMP-compliant, global service provider for functional testing of biotherapeutics, biosimilars and antibody drug conjugates. For over 19 years our scientists have been designing and validating sophisticated bioanalytical assays to characterize and measure the therapeutic potential of large and small molecule biotherapeutics. Our work supports regulatory drug submission applications from biopharmaceutical companies globally.

We are seeking a Scientist with expertise in protein biochemistry, cellular biology and molecular biology. Strong troubleshooting skills and QPCR experience is highly preferred. The successful candidate will be a key technical contributor to the design, validation and execution of cell-based and solid phase ligand binding assays to measure the functional and affinity binding properties of biotherapeutics including therapeutic monoclonal antibodies, biosimilars, antibody drug conjugates, peptides, biologics and oncolytic viruses.

This position requires hands-on laboratory work, as well as supervision of research associates and technicians. Familiarity with GMP/GLP regulations is desired but not a required.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, validate and execute in vitro experiments to characterize and measure the therapeutic and binding properties of biotherapeutics including monoclonal antibodies, antibody drug conjugates, biosimilars and biologics
  • Perform cell culture-based bioassays, immunological assays (i.e. ELISA), protein affinity binding studies (biolayer interferometry), DNA-based and other assays as required
  • Review and interpret scientific literature to learn about new techniques and applications.
  • Ensure that experiments, analytical methods and data meet the scientific and regulatory requirements for the intended use i.e. characterization, comparability, stability, and lot release. Familiarity with USP and FDA guidelines helpful but not required
  • Author, review and approve SOPs, study protocols, reports and other scientific documents
  • Maintain a steady grasp of new scientific developments and new technologies
  • Present scientific data to colleagues and clients, prepare and present external presentations and posters
  • Perform additional duties to support the safe and efficient operation of the laboratory and workplace

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • A proven ability to be highly productive and successful in a high pace work environment with excellent attention to details and meticulous bench work
  • Competency in computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint).
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  • Willingness to champion new and existing projects
  • Excellent team player. Willing to support co-workers with other projects. Shares relevant information and seeks technical advice and input when necessary
  • Willing to accept temporary responsibilities outside of initial job description

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • A PhD in biological sciences required and 2 years of demonstrated experience in developing and optimizing biological assays and protein-protein interaction studies preferred
  • Expertise in mammalian cell culture and aseptic techniques
  • Highly familiar with standard testing equipment and procedures including, but not limited to, biolayer interferometry, surface plasmon resonance, ELISA, cell culture applications and cell-based bioassays, screening assays, enzymatic assays, protein affinity/binding measurements, cell-counting and QPCR
  • Strong practical knowledge of quality statistics is desired, i.e. Parallel line analysis
  • A proven ability to be highly productive and successful in a high pace work environment with excellent attention to details and meticulous bench work.
  • Competency in computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint).

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Successful candidate will be working in a controlled regulatory compliant biosafety level 2 laboratory environment and office
  • Work may periodically require attending to experiments outside standard working hours
