Job overview

Reporting to the CFO, the Controller is responsible for overseeing the company’s accounting and financial reporting. The Controller plays a key role in the day-to-day financial and compliance functions, with interaction with the leadership team and external auditors. As a senior finance leader, you will coach and mentor junior team members. You will perform a variety of functions including monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial reporting.


What you'll be doing

Your responsibilities will primarily include the following:


Reporting and Related Functions

  • Conduct financial analysis, monthly general ledger (GL) review, and prepare various periodical reports.
  • Prepare and analyze a wide range of monthly reports including financial statements and related notes for review by the management.
  • Prepare monthly and annual regulatory reports to Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) including underlying schedules.
  • Create reports in c-view and Lodestar and reconcile with relevant GLs.
  • Prepare month-end journal entries and accruals including amortization of assets.
  • Conduct monthly bank account reconciliations.
  • Oversee accounts payable ensuring internal control and company standards are maintained and improved where necessary.
  • Produce daily liquidity and foreign exchange balance reports.
  • Reconcile registered products record with Central 1.
  • Monitor credit unions’ current accounts on daily basis; analyze and explain major movements.
  • Prepare other reports for management’s review as assigned.


Leadership

  • Coach two junior team members, overseeing the accounting/finance day to day operations.
  • Provide training, guidance, and mentorship to direct reports.
  • Assist CFO with organizing work activities of the team.
  • In the absence of CFO, ensure smooth, day-to-day operation of the finance/accounting department.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement. Streamline processes, improve productivity, and resolve issues in a timely and effective manner.


Audit

  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with internal and external auditors, consultants, and regulators.
  • Prepare documentation for interim and year-end audits.


Perform other duties as assigned. This position may take over additional tasks as experience grows and time permits.


What we're looking for

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Minimum five (5) years of proven accounting experience, in a financial institution; experience in credit union environment strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting or Business Administration is required.
  • Professional accounting/finance designation: (eg. CPA, CGA, CA, CMA) required.
  • Proven leadership experience with motivational skills as well as the ability to lead, coach and develop a team.
  • Experience working with regulators and external auditors required.
  • Proficiency in advanced Excel (Macros, VLOOKUP, PivotTables, etc.) with working knowledge of MS Word, Outlook.
  • Knowledge of DNA and Prologue an asset.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communications skills, written and oral, excellent presentation skills (including executive-level summaries) and ability to interact effectively with professionals at all levels.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and deal with ambiguous situations.
  • Excellent time management, attention to detail, strong sense of urgency; ability to multi- task and work within strict deadlines.
  • Demonstrated initiative, self-motivated, positive attitude, ability to work independently with minimum supervision and in a team environment.


Working Conditions/Physical Effort:

  • Professional, team-oriented, office environment.
  • Standard corporate business hours based on 37.5-hour work week; ability to work extended hours, when needed.
  • The physical demands are those of an office environment. These include, but are not limited to sitting, considerable use of computer and phone, occasional moving of items up to 25 pounds in weight.
