The Manager, Accounting Operations is responsible for overseeing the Corporate Accounting transaction services team: accounts payable and accounts receivable.  The Manager is responsible for subledger close, A/P working papers, and the recording and reporting of these financial transactions, while also supporting AP accruals and bank account reconciliations. This role leads the continuous improvement initiatives for accounting processes and procedures impacting all Seaspan ULC operating companies. 

Functional Reporting Relationship

The Manager reports directly to the Senior Finance Manager, VSY Shipyards. There are 3 positions reporting to the role: Supervisor, Accounting Operations and two MoveUp Grade VI Clerks. This role is expected to work closely with other members of the Finance & Accounting and Supply Chain Management departments.

Note: This position qualifies for an optional hybrid work schedule after 90 days of onsite work and onboarding. Employee will be subject to the terms of the Flexible Work Policy Agreement. 

What you'll do

  • Builds strong relationships with business area (customer) management, troubleshooting, providing training and problem solving when necessary.
  • Manages operations of the Accounting department, including assessing, monitoring and fulfilling staff requirements.
  • Conducts performance appraisals including providing accounting staff feedback and suggestions for improvement. 
  • Consults with Human Resources on various MoveUp employee related issues as needed.
  • Reports and manages Accounting Operations KPI’s, including target setting and identification and implementation of improvement opportunities.
  • Expedites processing of accounts payable and accounts receivable.
  • Responsible for accounts payable processing, prioritizing and process improvement initiatives.
  • Manages and approves weekly payment run processing.
  • Supports review and posting of all batches, accruals and adjustments prepared by the Accounting staff. 
  • Reconciles various accounts and maintains balance sheet working papers on a monthly basis, as assigned.
  • Prepares financial reports, KPIs and analysis as requested.
  • Responsible for preparing and maintaining process and procedure documentation.
  • Assists external auditors with the annual audit as required by preparing working papers and schedules and responding to enquiries.

What you'll bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working towards completion of a professional accounting designation: CPA (CA, CMA, CGA). 
  • 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience that includes experience with account reconciliations, managing accounts payable and receivable, change management and continuous improvement.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience managing team members.
  • Analytical skills to understand large and complex account reconciliations.
  • Organization and time-management skills.
  • A highly organized team player with abilities in prioritizing multiple tasks and ensuring that all deadlines are met.
  • Knowledge of financial practices and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently under tight deadlines.
  • Understanding of related auditing and IT functions.
  • Ability to manage and direct staff in ways that ensure their productivity.
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Maintain the highest degree of professionalism and confidentiality in all matters.
  • Experience with JD Edwards Enterprise One and business intelligence, or proven computer aptitude with major ERP system.

The estimated salary for this position is $108,000 - $132,000. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
