ROLE OVERVIEW
To provide geological and technical support to the Project Manager to assist in the successful management of the project to deliver agreed project and branch objectives. Establishment and maintenance of positive client and community relationships.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Safety Health and Environment:
- Pro-actively manage the effectiveness of health safety and environmental measures on site
- Carry out specific HS&E responsibilities as defined in the Branch and Project Management Systems
- Act in emergency situations
- Ensure that all legislative and contractual constraints regarding health safety and environmental issues are considered during the mine planning process
Project Planning:
- Assist the Project Manager or Technical Services Superintendent in the establishment of project objectives
- Assist in the preparation and implementation of Project Management Plans reflecting these strategies and establishing the basis for the overall Project Management System, consistent with the Branch Management System
- Plan, maintain and monitor Ore Mining and Intrusion plans and programs encompassing all ore operations and completion activities involved in the Project
- Prepare work packages and documentation for tender by potential subcontractors
- Provide geological and technical input to mining operations management and supervisory staff to allow productive and cost-effective completion of the works
Team Management and Development:
- Establish and organize the project team in conjunction with the Project Manager
- Provide training and coaching of operators and supervisory staff in the identification of rock types and understanding of geology.
- Recognize, encourage and participate in the training and development of project personnel
- Work within team structure to provide services to internal/external clients
Project Delivery / Performance:
- Plan, lead, organize and control all project resources to deliver the Project Management System requirements and project objectives on an ongoing basis
- Quality control of ore mining operations to meet Client expectations for ore grade and recovery.
- Provide feedback for mining personnel, D&B personnel, and supervisory staff on any variation in ore quality.
- Provide briefs and plans on ore mining plans and schedules and manage the ore logistics chain from pit to ROM / Crusher feed.
- Develop a short term “micro” geological model for inclusion into a 4-month schedule.
- Reconcile actual ore mined against geological models, 4-month schedule and 12-month schedule.
- Pro-actively plan and participate in audit and review programs to ensure System compliance and effectiveness
- Ensure ore reserve estimates are updated with the most recently available information to ensure ore mining schedules are as accurate as possible.
- Act to correct areas of project under performance or non-compliance
- Co-ordinate, control and have an active part to play in the geological, ore mining and technical activities of the project
- Continually evaluate, review and determine the most appropriate use of ore mining methodologies for best project performance
- Regularly report to the Project Manager on the geological, systems and productivity performance of the project
- Assist with geological input into mine plans and drill and blast design.
- Generate ideas and proposals for continuous improvement of ore control management.
- Perform all duties as outlined under the Geotechnical PHMP
Quality:
- Pro-actively support the implementation and effectiveness of quality management system on the Project.
- Carry out specific quality responsibilities as defined in the Project Management System
Client / Community / Other Relationships:
- Manage client, community and Supplier / Subcontractor / Consultant relationships to achieve long term loyalty. Develop the culture of repeat business in all project staff.
- Proactively market the company and project to clients and the marketplace.
- Maintain industrial harmony. Resolve issues promptly in conjunction with appropriate personnel
Reporting and Records:
- Liaise with and report client and other issues for resolution to the Project Manager
- Ensure ore production reporting is accurate
- Review data to identify areas of strength and weaknesses and compliance with tender KPI’s
General:
- Carry out specific responsibilities as defined in the Project Management Systems.
- Plan for and facilitate the effective utilization of project resources.
- Perform other duties as may be defined by the Technical Services Superintendent
Performs other related duties as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Competent in MS Office and geological modelling packages (Vulcan, GIS Software, etc.)
- Understanding of mine planning and scheduling packages
- Knowledge of relevant legislation including provincial/national regulations, guidelines and Canadian standards
- Well-developed written and oral communication skills
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum 2 years mining industry experience as a Geologist
- Sound knowledge of the appropriate sampling practices and techniques
- Valid Canadian Driver’s License
- Authorization to work lawfully in the Canada without sponsorship from Thiess is required.
EDUCATION
- Diploma or Degree in Geology
- Diploma in Front Line Management (Desirable)

The salary range for this role is [112,005 - 134,406 CAD]. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. Thiess considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
