Recruitment range: $70,137- $77,330 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.

Performance range: starting salary to max of $91,214 is available through annual performance increases.

Job Summary

As part of Financial Planning and Operations, the Financial Reporting department prepares all internal management reporting and all external compliance financial reporting for the University of Victoria and its consolidated entities. The department is responsible for the production and delivery of reliable, relevant, accurate and timely financial statements, and reports for both internal management purposes and external users.

The Endowment and Pension Accounting unit administers three Foundations and Long-Term Disability Trust, provides accounting services for University’s three pension plans, and provides support to governing bodies and units across campus. Reporting to the Manager of Endowment & Pension Accounting, this position’s primary responsibility is to support the production of the monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements, working papers and reports. The position also participates in unit projects as allocated by the Manager.

Key accountabilities for this role include:

  • Performing accounting functions including preparing and reviewing and journal entries.
  • Preparing trade orders, fund transfers and invoice payments.
  • Analyzing and reconciling investment statements.
  • Working with senior team members to prepare and analyze financial statements and reports.
  • Coordination of statutory and other compliance processes
  • Training and ongoing user support to staff across the university
  • Participation in special projects
  • Other duties of similar scope

This position applies Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS), Canadian accounting standards for pension plans and other Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) as applicable.

Job Requirements

This position requires an undergraduate degree and the pre-requisites towards and accounting designation (CPA) with an expectation that the designation will be completed within a reasonable timeframe (3-4 years) plus:

  • Three years of pre-designation, professional accounting experience and applied knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles with emphasis on knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS).
  • Experience in a large, diverse, and sophisticated accounting environment.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

In addition, this position requires:

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Advanced computer proficiency
  • Ability to facilitate corporate training.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Superior communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with all stakeholders
  • Understanding of investment accounting concepts, calculations, and reporting.

Competency requirements include:

Assets or Preferences:

  • Experience with accounting software, especially Banner and FAST Finance.
  • Previous investment experience preferred.
