The Role
VMA is inviting applications for the full-time position of Food Handler. The successful candidate will have experience working independently in a fast-paced kitchen environment. You will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe preparation, handling, and serving of all catered food items. Reporting to the Assistant Supervisor, you will maintain the highest standards of food safety and handling for 8 classrooms for up to 150 students. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about food handling, working independently, inventory management, cleanliness, and organization.
This position is from 9:00-4:45/5:00pm, Monday to Friday, with 37.5 hours scheduled weekly. Shift rotations do not occur and you will not be scheduled to work weekends or on any holidays.
What You'll Do
- Independently manage all kitchen and food handling services, including but not limited to, preparing catered lunches and snacks, cleaning and disinfecting kitchen, and washing and sanitizing all dishes
- Manage the receiving, inspection, and storage of catered foods and general inventory
- Maintain food records, including twice daily temperature checks and individual substitutions
- Maintain a safe and clean kitchen space that is kept organized at all times. Correct any unsanitary/unsafe conditions.
- Complete all cleaning duties throughout the building daily, including hallways, stairwells, washrooms, and break rooms
- Ensure that property sanitary and safety procedures are always followed. Report all equipment failures, breakdowns or deficiencies promptly to the Assistant Supervisor.
- Ensure all food and equipment are prepared, stored, and handled in accordance with Toronto Public Health and infection control policies and procedures
- Comply with Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, policies and procedures, in addition to VMA's internal policies and procedures
- Post updated catering menus weekly and distribute to classrooms. Communicate to classrooms with any updates to the menu, individual substitutions, or kitchen operations
- Provide support to the classrooms as needed
- Perform other reasonable duties as required, which may be assigned from time to time by the Assistant Supervisor
What You'll Need
- Current Food Handler Certification
- 1-2 years experience preparing and serving food for large groups in a fast-paced food service setting
- Completion of or enrolment in the Food Services Worker certificate program or Post-Secondary diploma/degree in Food/Nutrition Management or cooks/chefs who have a diploma from an established College is considered a strong asset
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize multiple tasks, and meet deadlines in a food service setting
- Ability to operate and clean various pieces of food services equipment
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and WHMIS
- Ability to lift up to 40lbs
- Fully immunized with a Health Canada recognized COVID-19 vaccine
- Excellent English language communication skills, both written and verbal
- Current and clear Vulnerable Sector Check or willing to receive one
- Standard First Aid/CPR C certification or willing to receive a certification
- Able to legally work in Canada
