Position Overview
- Delivers course content and examines participants following established YMCA criteria.
- Maintains regular and predictable attendance. Secures a substitute if unable to cover scheduled shift.
- Develops and implements sequential weekly lesson plans.
- Recognizes participant learning styles and delivers content accordingly.
- Coaches and develops participants to meet success.
- Communicates (verbal and written) child’s progress to parents and supervisors.
- Maintains accurate, up to date weekly progress sheets and records for participants.
- Takes attendance, ensures participants are signed into and out of the program.
- Perform duties such as clean the pool deck (deck toys should be stored when not in use). Ensure pool deck remains uncluttered. Deck walk-around should be done to ensure no garbage or debris are on the deck or window ledges.
- Actively participates in scheduled programs, meetings and special events
- In collaboration with individual program members, program volunteers and YMCA program staff, assists and encourages program members to access additional appropriate programs offered at this location.

General YMCA Responsibilities
- Demonstrates appropriate behaviours in line with our mission, vision and values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the association. Represents the YMCA and the association in a professional manner.
- Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services.
- Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
- Current certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards: Bronze Cross, Workplace Standard First Aid & CPR-C.
- Current Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check
- Current YMCA or Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor certification.
- Previous experience instructing swim lessons an asset.
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certification is an asset.
- Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication (verbal & written) with members, staff and volunteers.
- Organizational skills.
- Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity.
- Flexibility regarding assigned hours of work - evenings and weekends
