Job Description
The position of Behavior Technician generally works one-to-one with a client with autism, aged 3 - 20. He/she provides Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy to teach the child the skills that he/she is missing. He/she also helps to reduce troublesome behaviors that may be disruptive or harmful to the child or the child’s family.
Although, working with children with autism can be one of the most rewarding job, it is still a challenge. It requires patience, understanding, tolerance, teamwork, strong communication skills, compassion and at times a good sense of humor, or at least the ability to not take things to seriously. This assignment may require you to work in a variety of settings such as homes, schools, community settings, in an office location or multiple settings. Proper attire and decorum is expected at each location and/or site, suited for the activity planned.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include implementation of behavior intervention plans as written by BCBA. This guides staff on how to work with the child. Adjusting the environment to prevent a behavior from being triggered or further escalated is a helpful strategy often used. Teaching replacement behaviors such as functional communication, asking for help or coping strategies is a pillar of the program. The program will also emphasize skill acquisition for areas that are behind such communication, social skills and self-help skills. Behavior technicians track and record data from individual sessions for the BCBA to analyze later. A token economy or another reinforcement system is tool a Behavior Technician uses to manage behavior. When behaviors escalate, Behavior technicians use reactive strategies to remain calm, deescalate tense situations, and calm down the child before the behavior evolves further. They are also taught how to handle crisis situations in case there is ever a situation that calls for that level of intervention.
Ongoing training is an important component to this position and to our philosophy at 4 Behavior Change. The first two weeks will be a training period, after which you will be assigned a client(s). This will be a paid training, however, in order to receive this benefit you must remain with the company for 3 months. There will be multiple training opportunities yearly, which will be reimbursed at your regular rate.
