GENERAL INTRODUCTION:

 

The Archbishop, visible principle of unity in his archdiocese, is called to build up the particular Church unceasingly in the communion of all its members, and to ensure that their diverse gifts and ministries, in union with the universal Church, serve to build up all the faithful and to spread the Gospel. (Apostolorum Successores 8).  He must take care that all the affairs which belong to the administration of the whole archdiocese are duly coordinated and are ordered to attain more suitably the good of the portion of the people of God entrusted to him.” (Apostolorum Successores 177).

 

Each position employed in the Chancery helps to extend the ministry of the Archbishop in particular ways as outlined in the position description.

 

NOTEThis is an appointed position by Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Seattle and subject to Archdiocesan Policy pertaining to appointed positions.  The Archbishop reserves the right to make modifications to the position description at his discretion and in accord with the provisions of canon law.

 

 

GENERAL SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL PURPOSE:

 

The Director of Planning & Mission Effectiveness leads the development and implementation of the Archdiocesan-wide Strategic Pastoral Plan and assures mission effectiveness across the Archdiocese of Seattle. This role will direct the program for implementation of Partners in the Gospel.  The Director will work across departments and disciplines to oversee design, development, implementation, and evaluation of all major strategic initiatives.  In addition, the Director will direct data analysis to support planning initiatives in the Archdiocese. The Director reports to the Chief Operating Officer or their designee.

 

ESSENTIAL POSITION DUTIES:

 

  1. Accountable for the planning, development, and implementation of Archdiocesan wide strategic pastoral planning.
  2. Directs the work of the chancery leadership team for all planning, implementation oversight, project management, and analytical aspects of strategic pastoral transformation initiatives, including Partners in the Gospel.
  3. Directs the creation of content, resources and training for strategic pastoral transformation initiatives.
  4. Manages the review process for the One Parish Plan for Partners in the Gospel to ensure that parish families restructure in a way that meet the mission of the Archdiocese and achieve a re-envisioned Church in Western Washington.
  5. Accountable for analytical needs of the Chancery in support of planning.
  6. Ensures involvement of relevant stakeholders and departments, forms sub-committees and task forces as needed to achieve Archdiocesan priorities.
  7. Directs development of analyses and reports, both qualitative and quantitative, to support the case for change – both pastoral and strategic.
  8. Serves as primary point of contact for COO and Vicar General in all matters related to strategic pastoral planning.
  9. Oversees and coordinates all strategic and pastoral planning working groups to ensure progress and congruency with mission and vision.
  10. Participates in consultative meetings to ensure accurate capture and incorporation of required revisions and refinements to content and training.
  11. Supports parish liaison staff service to pastors and parish staff in the implementation and ongoing management of strategic pastoral initiatives.
  12. Coordinates Archdiocesan Pastoral Council activities.
  13. Coordinates activities and communications between Parish Action Committee and parish family liaisons.
  14. Serve as advisor to parishes in their strategic pastoral planning efforts. Support parish re-organization efforts, including discernment for moving from a Parish Family to one canonical parish, in coordination with the Chancellor and other appropriate Chancery departments.
  15. Works collaboratively with all Chancery departments to identify or establish reasonable, evidence-based, and reliable methods/metrics to evaluate their mission effectiveness, particularly post implementation of parish family structure.
  16. Creates and operationalizes methods for measuring and reporting progress of parish families toward goals of vibrancy. 
  17. Hires, manages, coaches and evaluates Planning and Mission Effectiveness staff.

Qualifications


ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Primary

  1. Willingness and ability to support the mission of the Church by extending the ministry of the Archbishop.
  2. Ability and desire to use God-given gifts and talents in service of the local Church in support of the collaboration between lay and ordained Ministers.
  3. Active member of a parish/faith community in good standing with the Church.
  4. Strong desire to assist in the growth of the Church.

 

Education:

  1. Bachelors degree required.
  2. Advanced theology studies preferred.

 

Experience:

  1. Five years increasingly responsible experience.
  2. Strategic planning, project management, or organizational design experience.
  3. Experience in staffing boards and major leadership groups where building consensus and moving projects forward requires patience, focus, leadership, and tact.
  4. Experience with broad changes across a large enterprise.

 

Other Elements:

  1. Desire to grow in personal faith life and enthusiasm for sharing the joy of the Gospel.
  2. Curiosity to learn and understand the many works of the Church in western Washington and desire to apply professional skills to support further effectiveness of those efforts.
  3. Excellent oral communications skills to facilitate meetings or conduct oral presentations.
  4. Excellent written communications skills to write reports.
  5. Flexibility and emotional intelligence in working with small and large groups of different stakeholders in consensus decision making scenarios.
  6. Strong working knowledge of, or strong willingness to learn, Catholic parish structures and organizations.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of persons including working in multicultural settings.
  8. Willing and able to work some evenings and weekends.
  9. Must possess own vehicle and valid Washington driver’s license to travel throughout the Archdiocese.

 

 

 

 

Any offered salary is determined based on internal equity, internal salary ranges, market data, applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications.
