Reports to: Head of Engineering

Summary Objective

The Product Designer is key in translating the wants and needs of Food Rescue Hero partners and volunteers into product design features. They are responsible for driving end-user discovery, outlining optimal UX workflows, contributing to product specifications, creating digital or print drawings, and articulating the story of how a fully-functional feature will manifest for users. The Product Designer has an eye for color and shape and is able to convert user requirements into practical product features.

The strategic goals of this position are to:Use internal and external feedback, technical constraints, support implications, and design best practices to create and evolve product features to optimize functionality and the user experienceDrive a best-in-class platform UX through a knack for human-centric design.Metrics for success include:

Learn about and advocate for the people who use our platform.Use ethical and inclusive design methods; center impacted people in the workDesign elegant human-centered experiences for web and mobile applicationsCreate concepts for new featuresAssess product's existing user experience and propose improvementsCollaborate with Product to understand opportunities and align on strategyTranslate quantitative data and qualitative insights into hypotheses that inform design approachExplore visual design treatmentsCreate prototypes to illustrate workflows and explore different scenariosWork closely with Engineering to consider technical constraints and support implementationPresents work to stakeholders, explain design decisions, and implement feedbackMaintain documentation: design system, styleguide, etc.Communicates clearly and effectively in all oral and written communicationsPerform other job-related duties as assignedSkills, Knowledge & Abilities:

Curious: eager to learn, unafraid of complexity, asking smart questionsBackground designing for mobile applications and SaaS productsEmpathetic with strong customer service skillsExcellent visual & verbal communicatorsSkilled at refining ideas through feedback cycles, design iteration, and testingHolistic systems thinker with an understanding of accessibilityKeen attention to detail (especially typography and language)Organized: work independently, excellent time management habitsQualifications and Experience - Required

1-3 years experience in a product design roleAn outstanding portfolio of design workProficiency with modern design tools: Figma, Zeplin, etc.Qualifications and Experience - Preferred

Skills

UX research experienceMotion design skillsFamiliarity with development lifecycle tools (i.e., Jira)Front-end development skills (HTML, CSS, JS)Experience with participatory design methodologiesPhysical Demands:

Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs repetitively (to support food recovery)Work Location

The position is classified as hybrid with physical work location to encompass all of the following as directed by the supervisor: in-office, field and/or community, and work from home
