Job Description: In close coordination with Attorneys in the Discover Legal Department, this role applies knowledge of a variety of legal concepts to support the legal department and businesses on a variety of legal and regulatory matters. Actively manages and escalates risk and customer-impacting issues within the day-to-day role to management. Responsibilities Work collaboratively with in-house litigation attorneys, coverage attorneys, and business unit officers, directors, and staff to identify and implement risk mitigation strategies, as well as foster efficiencies in litigation handling. Responsible for entering and maintaining matter information in Legal Tracker (matter management system), including deadlines, hearing and trial dates, and internal deadlines, investigation data, matter status, and key data metrics, and uploading pleadings and other relevant documents. Update and maintain case files in Discover systems, including uploading pleadings, correspondence, and other relevant documentation. Prepare letters, check requests, electronic filings and other mailings as needed to support litigation efforts. Conduct internal investigations to identify relevant information necessary to inform the company's decision-making with respect to appropriate strategies for disposition of pending and threatened litigation. Conduct root cause analysis to identify, mitigate, and where possible, eliminate existing and potential litigation, compliance, and operational risks to the company. Draft and prepare reports, analyses, internal memoranda, settlement agreements, and external correspondence. Exercises prudent discretion and decision-making capabilities to complete projects and enhance programs and processes relevant to assigned SME. Communicates effectively with colleagues, clients, management, third parties, and counterparties as necessary to provide information and/or make decisions relevant to role's SME requirements. Help build and maintain policies, procedures, job aids and templates. Ensures efficient and effective risk and compliance management practices, by adhering to required standards and process. Collaborates with clients and colleagues to achieve quality excellence. Minimum Qualifications At a minimum, here’s what we need from you: Associate's Degree in Paralegal Studies, Law, or related field 2 years of experience in an in-house legal department, law firm, or related field In lieu of a degree, 4 years of experience in an in-house legal department, law firm, or related field Preferred Qualifications If we had our say, we’d also look for: 1 years of experience in financial services, or related field In lieu of a degree, 2 years of experience in financial services, or related field Paralegal, or Paralegal Certificate Notary designation Self-starter/Ability to work independently. Excellent communication skills- verbal and written. Compensation: The base pay for this position generally ranges between $31.73 to $44.23. Additional incentives may be provided as part of a market competitive total compensation package. Factors, such as but not limited to, geographical location, relevant experience, education, and skill level may impact the pay for this position.
