What are the responsibilities and job description for the Scientific Developer position at 84.51°?
Scientific Developer, Forecasting Center of Excellence
The Forecasting Center of Excellence (FCOE) develops and manages multiple forecasts used by 84.51° and Kroger. This is a cross-functional team where data scientists, engineers and product owners work collaboratively to support existing forecast sciences and deliver continuous product enhancements and new forecast solutions. The team leverages cutting-edge science and cloud technologies, working with big data assets in a cloud environment primarily with Python/Spark, generating billions of forecasts daily. Our main product is an item-level forecast used for price and promotion planning as well as supply chain operations for millions of items.
This Scientific Developer role bridges the specializations between our data scientists and engineers to help take the kernel of a new idea through research to large scale testing and then production. It requires a unique mix of computer and data science necessary to create computationally efficient software implementations of scientifically complex algorithms. This role principally focuses on forecasting at scale, but also involves statistics, general machine learning, data engineering, cloud development, software engineering and optimization.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work hand-in-hand with research scientists to design computationally efficient state-of-the art scientific methods and algorithms, primarily focusing on forecasting, to solve problems in the retailer and manufacturer/supplier domains.
- Manage large scale test design and execution
- Pilot the adoption of new tech stacks and modeling, forecasting, machine learning or data engineering packages
- Shared responsibility with the software engineering team to develop automated testing of forecasting code, support production questions, feature engineering, creation of science services and creation of science packages or libraries
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS and EXPERIENCE:
- Advanced degree in computer science, computer engineering, mathematics or related subject; and/or extensive work demonstrating expertise using these skills.
- Strong development background with at least one procedural or Object-oriented programming language. Experience and expertise in high-performance Python development is preferred, C/C and/or Java are also desirable.
- Ability to create computationally efficient solutions for feature engineering, demand models and forecasting.
- Proven ability to prototype solutions – using e.g., R and Python to facilitate testing of algorithms on large data sets.
- Experience building python packages, REST APIs and orchestrated systems
- Experience with Big Data concepts, Spark architecture and cloud platforms (especially Azure and Databricks), tools and architecture is a plus.
- Experience interacting with research, engineering and product teams is a plus.
