Job Overview: A1FED is seeking a Senior Database Architect to lead the design, development, and optimization of agency’s databases as part of their ongoing IT modernization. This role will involve architecting and managing large-scale databases, ensuring data integrity, security, and performance across both on-premises and cloud environments. The Senior Database Architect will play a critical role in supporting agency’s mission by ensuring that data solutions are robust, scalable, and aligned with agency’s evolving business needs.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of agency’s database architecture across multiple environments, including on-premises systems and cloud services like Microsoft Azure and AWS.
Collaborate with development, infrastructure, and security teams to ensure that database architectures are integrated into agency’s IT ecosystem, supporting both operational and analytical needs.
Develop and optimize database schemas, indexes, views, and stored procedures for efficient data retrieval and storage.
Implement best practices for database security, including data encryption, access controls, and compliance with federal regulations such as CUI handling, NIST, and FISMA requirements.
Ensure high availability and disaster recovery solutions are in place for critical databases, utilizing techniques such as replication, clustering, and backups.
Work closely with agency’s data governance team to implement data quality, master data management, and data lifecycle management strategies.
Monitor database performance and conduct capacity planning to ensure scalability as agency’s data needs grow.
Support the migration of legacy databases to cloud platforms, ensuring minimal downtime and data integrity during transitions.
Maintain up-to-date documentation for all database architectures, configurations, and procedures.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex database issues, providing Tier 3 support as necessary.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (or 8 years of relevant experience).
5-8 years of experience in database architecture and management, with expertise in both relational (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle) and NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, DynamoDB).
Extensive experience with cloud database services, such as Amazon RDS, Microsoft Azure SQL, and cloud-native NoSQL databases.
Strong knowledge of database performance tuning, backup/recovery strategies, and high-availability configurations.
Proficiency in database modeling, design, and optimization techniques.
Experience in migrating on-premises databases to cloud environments.
Familiarity with data security best practices and compliance with federal regulations, including CUI, NIST, and FISMA.
Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to design solutions for complex data challenges.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with federal agencies.
Certification in database management or cloud platforms (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer, AWS Certified Database Specialty).
Familiarity with agency’s enterprise applications and data management frameworks.
