Jr Accountant

Job Overview

Accountants will perform research and analysis of financial abnormalities and determine root causes. Work with accountants providing recommended solutions, gather and document the support needed to withstand audit scrutiny.

Responsibilities and Duties

Support and analysis can consist of the following area, but not limited to:

• Analysis work of the financial statements, footnotes, trial balance, GTAS reports, adjusting entries, SF-133, specific general ledger accounts or at the Treasury Account Symbol level. 
• Assists REE accountants with monitoring, troubleshooting, and obtain root causes behind outstanding Canceling Year Appropriation activities to ensure they are cleared prior to fiscal year-end. 
• Assists with monitoring monthly trading partners differences that reconcile to the Intradepartmental Transactions Reconciliation System to reduce quarter-end trading partner differences for each agency. 
• Support LFSB in analyzing REE monthly adjustments in FMMI and FSDW to identify commonality of issues; perform root cause analysis; determine if the issue is REE specific or if the issue should be elevated to the department level for resolution.
• Assist NIFA accountant with the following as needed:
  • Monthly SF-133 reconciliation activities associated with NIFA Treasury account symbols
  • Manually summarize and prepare investment activity worksheets (premiums, discounts, interest income, and principal), which are used by the NIFA accountant for recording NIFA Investment activity.
  • Assists LFSB with analyzing quarterly aged ULO results using Excel or equivalent applications. 

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
• 2-4 years as an accountant 
• SFAS rules and strong understanding of the financial management processes
• Understanding of Federal laws and regulations
• Ability to see and understand process gaps
• Prepare status reports upon request by COR
• Ability to gather documentation supporting conclusion reached
• Scheduling meeting and coordinating with staff
• Strong skills in MS Excel, MS Word, and SAP (or similar financial management systems)
• Ability to follow step by step instructions with strong communication skills
• Ability to conduct analysis and translate findings to be used by the branch
• CPA preferred
