What are the responsibilities and job description for the Data Scientist I/II position at AbbVie?
Convergence is a service organization that creates enterprise data and digital capabilities to help functions in their mission to improve R&D productivity and deliver new cures. The Convergence AI and Data Analytics group at AbbVie seeks a creative and motivated Data Scientist with expertise transforming large and complex data into actionable insights. The candidate will be foundational in developing and implementing the computational tools to help valorize AbbVie’s R&D Convergence Hub (ARCH), which is a knowledge base expertly curated from over 100 data sources. As a Data Scientist in the Convergence AI and Data Analytics group, you will have unlimited access to diverse scientific expertise and the resources to translate those collaborative efforts into query engines, data views, and visualization tools used at scale. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals driven to solve disparate biomedical problems with data, modelling, and visualization.
Working with stakeholders across R&D, the successful candidate will identify data sources—both internal and external to the ARCH data lake—to address specific business needs, and then build end-to-end solutions for retrieval, transformation, analysis, and visualization. Using your expertise in Spark and SQL, you will create custom data views and Python/R APIs to harmonize the data and analysis methods used by bioinformaticians, biostatisticians, etc. To demonstrate method and data utility, you will collaborate with engineers in Convergence AI and Data Analytics to integrate your work with an ecosystem of in-house statistics and machine-learning algorithms, and then serve the results to scientists across AbbVie using your custom dashboards (Dash/Shiny/Plotly). You will help expedite stakeholder adoption of the tools you create by participating in AbbVie’s internal training and education programs. In short, the end-to-end solutions you build will be utilized by 100s of scientists companywide to drive decision making and solve the most pressing problems in human health and disease.
This position reports to the Director of Convergence AI and Data Analytics and can be onsite, remote, or hybrid. Onsite locations include North Chicago, IL, the San Francisco Bay Area, or Worcester, MA. Level will be determined from candidate qualifications and experience and could include near-term leadership opportunities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop the Python or R APIs for interacting with AbbVie’s data lake of 100 expertly curated data sources. These APIs will translate Spark/SQL queries and expose custom data views to our in-house library of analysis methods, and allow stakeholders (e.g., computational biologists) to derive insight from the ARCH data lake.
- Develop dashboards using Plotly, Dash, and Shiny.
- Coordinate the development of query, analysis, and visualization tools with stakeholders, and with other engineers/scientists in Convergence AI and Data Analytics.
- Present results and prototypes to an audience of diverse scientific background.
- Encourage adoption of your computational tools through stakeholder training and education.
Qualifications:
- For Data Scientist I: bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 5 years of experience, master’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 2 years of experience.
- For Data Scientist II: bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 7 years of experience, master’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 5 years of experience.
- Expert in the Python or R data-science stacks, including visualization and dashboard packages (e.g., Plotly, Dash, and Shiny).
- Basic understanding in software engineering best practices and experience developing software with a team of engineers or data scientists.
- Experience with Spark and SQL.
- Ability to multitask and work within timelines.
- Demonstrated ability to learn, understand and master new technologies.
- Strong written and oral English communication skills.
- Ability to design and proctor training sessions.
Preferred:
- An active GitHub.
- Desire to teach and disseminate knowledge, as demonstrated by—for example—authoring articles in Medium or Towards Data Science, contributing to data science blogs, or “reputation” on Stack Overflow.
- Background in life sciences or work experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
