Description

Position Summary:  The Certified Peer Specialist helps individuals identify and work towards mental health and independent living goals. The functions of the role include crisis support, development of community roles and natural supports, individual advocacy, self-help, self-improvement and social network.

Role Qualifications:

  • Must be a self-identified individual who has received or is receiving mental health services for a serious emotional disturbance or serious mental illness
  • Must have or be in the process of completing The Department of Human Services of Pennsylvania-approved certified peer specialist training
  • Excellent computer skills with knowledge of Word, Excel and Web-based systems.
  • Knowledge of the services available within the community
  • Function as part of a team, working cooperatively with colleagues and supervisor.

Essential Functions (Primary Duties):

    • Provide opportunities for individuals receiving services to direct their own recovery
    • Ensure services provided are driven by the individual
    • Teach and support the use of skills needed to facilitate the individual’s recovery
    • Utilize tools such as the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) to assist consumers in creating their own individual wellness and recovery plans
    • Promote the knowledge of available service options and choices
    • Promote the use of natural support and other resources within the community
    • Assist in the development of a sense of wellness and self-worth
    • Maintain a working knowledge of current trends and developments in the mental health field by reading books, professional journals, and other relevant material
    • Documents work activities in the appropriate electronic database in accordance with departmental standards. This includes the following:
      • Identified person centered strengths, needs, abilities, and recovery goals
      • Interventions to assist the client with reaching their goals for recovery and independent living
      • Progress made towards goals

 

Job Specifications:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license, current car registration and car insurance
  • Must complete required clearances- Criminal Record Check, PA State Police Clearance Child Abuse, FBI Fingerprinting
  • Must provide proof of Covid Vaccination

Education/Relevant Work Experience:

  1. At a minimum, have a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  2. Within the last three (3) years, maintained at least 12 months of successful full or part time paid or voluntary work experience or obtained at least 24 credit hours of post-secondary education; and have related, supervised work or volunteer experience, as approved by the Pennsylvania Certification Board (PCB).
  3. Have completed the PCB-approved CPS training.
  4. Hold and maintain Certified Peer Specialist certification through the PCB or attain certification through PCB within 6 months of hire and maintain CPS certification. 

Work Schedule: 

  • A typical work week is 37.5 hours
  • The Certified Peer Specialist will have intermittent travel in order to meet with consumers and attend meetings that take place outside of AIM.

  • Physical demands:  While performing duties of job, employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.  Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Mental Demands:  Stressful due to time constraints and multiple tasks//procedures occurring at the same time. 
  • Work environment:  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Manual Dexterity Required:  Must be able to manipulate small electronic parts and controls
