What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electrical / Mechanical Engineering Technician position at Access Laser?

We provide leading edge gas-discharge-excited laser technologies to global industries in the medical, semiconductor, electronic, manufacturing, and scientific development R&D markets. We are currently seeking a full-time Electrical / Mechanical Technician to build and test early prototypes of lasers, electronics and experimental platforms for the R&D team.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Work as part of a small, interdisciplinary, and dedicated engineering team to support the design and testing of RF excited molecular laser, RF amplifier, and other system prototypes.
  • Assemble laser/electronic prototypes and perform initial bring-up, testing and basic troubleshooting.
  • Prototype and document wiring harnesses/enclosures for high EMI environments.
  • Build prototype vacuum processing equipment.
  • Conduct Design Verification Tests on first articles and document results.
  • Help document new designs by reviewing and updating schematics, BOMs, assembly drawings and manufacturing files.
  • Design test fixtures and write test procedures for electro-mechanical assemblies as required.

 

What you bring…

 

  • Associates degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, Engineering Technology or similar accredited degree, or equivalent experience.
  • Over 5 years’ experience supporting an interdisciplinary engineering design team.
  • Ability to assemble complex mechanical, electronic, and optical systems, including vacuum pump interfaces.
  • Proficiency in reading schematics and mechanical drawings.
  • Ability to assemble wiring harnesses and cable assemblies and to perform fine pitch SMT rework.
  • Experience with basic board bring-up and basic troubleshooting to component level.
  • Competent with electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, network analyzers and DVMs.
  • Experience documenting assembly instructions and drawings, BOMs, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability and desire to work in collaborative team environments.

 

Added advantage…

 

  • Knowledge of mechanical CAD and electronic EDA tools such as SolidWorks, Altium and Agile PLM software.
  • Familiar with basic machining processes and equipment such as a vertical mill.
  • An understanding of automated testing (using LabVIEW or MATLAB for example).
  • Familiar with RF test equipment (power meters, VSWR measurement, directional couplers, etc.).
  • Experience assembling and testing RF power amplifiers.
  • Testing experience with Class IV CO2 lasers
  • Experience assisting with Shock / Vibration testing and assisting with CE Mark testing.
