What are the responsibilities and job description for the Instructional Designer position at ACCO Brands?
The Instructional Designer works with subject matter experts and applies tested instructional design theories, practices, and methods. In this role, you will create compelling course content and engaging learning activities to meet training needs identified by the ACCO Brands HR Team, as well as the business. The goal is to facilitate adult learners in acquiring knowledge, skills, and competencies in an effective and appealing manner.
Responsibilities
- Leverage creativity and sound instructional design principles to design relevant training modules that are engaging, inspiring, and effective for the business
- Collaborate with subject matter experts, business leaders, and HR partners to develop accurate, effective, and timely curriculums that meet the needs of the business.
- Develop training materials (presenter decks, instructor guides, exercises, job aids, eLearning, videos, and other supporting materials) for instructor-led, virtual, and self-paced courses using brand-right guidelines.
- Produce design plans targeted to different audiences based on performance needs which integrate appropriate media and a variety of adult learning techniques.
- Apply sound project management and instructional design principles to motivate participants.
- Analyze existing training to identify opportunities to improve courses and documentation.
- Oversee translation process by working with external vendors or internal partners.
- Facilitate or co-facilitate training as needed.
- Complete related duties as assigned by the Director of Global Leadership & Learning.
Experience and Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Instructional Technology, Educational Psychology, Communication or a closely related field
- Instructional design background/certification
- Expertise of authoring software required (e.g. Articulate, Captivate, Camtasia, etc.)
- Previous experience designing and developing learning and facilitation materials for all types of delivery, including e-learning, in-person, virtual-live and eLearning
- Experience with Learning Management Systems, including e-learning tracking functionality, learner testing mechanisms, functional debugging and testing and publishing courses.
- Familiar with various methods for evaluating learning effectiveness and outcomes, such as Kirkpatrick and ROI, and experience incorporating measurement mechanisms into course and curriculum design
- Experience working with subject-matter experts and vendors
- Strong written communication skills required for writing/editing training materials that are clear, concise, and grammatically correct
- High degree of interpersonal communications for consulting and presentations
- Project planning and management skills essential for the numerous team projects
- Creative and conceptual skills required to understand a myriad of ideas and problems and to create multiple solutions using theories and concepts
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Excellent analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
- Self-starter who can work with limited supervision
- Current on emerging training and transfer of training methodologies with the ability to apply these developments in instructional design and related fields
- Adept at presenting complex strategic ideas and concepts in a user-friendly manner
- Proven working experience in instructional design and with instructional technology
- Excellent knowledge of learning theories and instructional design models
- Lesson and curriculum planning skills
- Basic HTML and Flash programming skill
- Solid knowledge of course development software and at least one Learning Management System
- Visual design skills (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator) and ability to storyboard
- Ability to write effective copy, instructional text, audio/video script
- Facilitation experience
- Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and 5 or more years of experience in instructional design, education technology or similar
- Reports to Director, Global Leadership & Learning
