Description:
The Electrical Engineer will work with office and plant personnel, Project Managers, and other disciplines to develop and modify electrical designs and update the arc flash study files in SKM Power Tools software. They will perform plant walkdowns to gather data for arc flash studies, conduct calculations, create/modify drawings, write scopes of work, coordinate with outside contractors/vendors, and make site visits to plants as needed. Additionally, they will write equipment specifications, develop preliminary designs, MTOs (material takeoffs) and man-hour estimates. The position also requires knowledge and ability to provide on-site and remote guidance to safely troubleshoot the power systems of the company’s 50 North American industrial manufacturing facilities.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
- Serve as a technical resource for the company for efficient electrical power distribution operation consistent with overall company safety objectives
- Conduct site walkdowns and collect all relevant data to complete an Arc Flash Study
- Update, modify and/or create Arc Flash Study Project Files in SKM Power Tools
- Generate reports for short circuit analysis, arc flash analysis, under-rated equipment analysis, a coordination study and a list of value engineered corrective recommendations
- Responsible for the electrical power distribution specifications and designs that are safe, high quality, practical and cost effective for the application
- Recommend, develop, and implement electrical power distribution maintenance and capital improvement plans
- Work with outside consultants as assigned on various capital and plant projects
- Provide the design and/or specification of equipment and processes
- Provide technical input for engineering design
- Review and approve engineering drawings and plans
- Work closely with other engineering disciplines on multi-discipline projects
- Work as a key part of a project team to meet project objectives
- Work with plant personnel to ensure compatibility with plant equipment and procedures
- Develop project scope definition
- Work with and educate less-experienced engineers in the execution of engineering functions
- Ensure the company’s safety values and practices are adhered to in all designs and plant modifications
- Lead and provide technical input to 3rd party engineering design firms to maintain company standards of quality, safety and scope adherence
- Utilize department resources, experience and existing engineering designs in the performance of assignments
- Provide troubleshooting and technical assistance to manufacturing plants
- Meet discipline commitments regarding schedule and budget
- Provide disciplines contribution of labor and material quantities for capital project cost estimates for engineering and equipment
- Assist in providing input to the Safety Department for the maintenance of the Electrical Safety Model Program
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
- Power distribution design from utility feed to low voltage substations, and down to the MCC level
- Medium voltage protection strategies and medium voltage motor control.
- Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) as well as NEMA and IEC standards.
- Ability to read and work with MCC schematics.
- Creation of Equipment Layouts (power, instrument and grounding plans).
- Sizing of power equipment.
- Proficient in performing electrical calculations.
- Develop and update Single line diagrams from information gathered.
- Ability to develop a Motor list.
- Ability to perform site assessments and plant walkdowns.
- Assist in preparing scope definition document.
- Ability to coordinate with third‐party engineering personnel, vendors, contractors, project manager, construction manager.
- Preparation of fabrication packages for Substations.
- Design of cable tray.
- Proficient in electrical CAD design.
Top Skills Required:
- On Site/Field Experience performing maintenance and trouble shooting of existing and outdated equipment and facilities (specifically for substations and power distribution lines feeding into substations i.e. expereince performing maintenance on an exisiting transformer)
- High Voltage Experience of at least 480v
- 15 years of experience at a minimum
- Experience with Capital Projects
- Industrial Experience (highly preferred)
- Experience Working through all phases of design and construction (i.e. estimating, schematic drawing, scope development. project management skills)
