What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controls Engineer position at Actalent?
Description:
Looking to hire a Controls Engineer to help take some of the workload from the owner, and to help support other Controls Engineering standpoint. There may be some other customers this person would also support. There's a chance the owner would even look for this person to eventually take over the company in the future!
This person will likely spend majority of their days onsite, where they will have a desk (next to the owner), and they will be responsible for maintaining/programming all of the PLC's/HMI's for the plant.
The PLC's are predominantly Allen Bradley, as well as some Modicon experience would be helpful, but not required. Knowledge of Wonderware (SCADA) would be a huge plus, but willing to teach this new person. This could be a more junior-level hire as long as they are willing to be trained, are coachable, and have a positive attitude! Need someone who wants to work in this type of environment as well meaning a small company atmosphere, and also working with heating/cooling & boilers/chillers. They will also be required to be onsite roughly 4-5 days per week. When not onsite, they will have the ability to work from home.
Skillset Overview: (but willing to train/teach)
- Allen Bradley PLC/HMI programming (ground up and modifying existing code)
- Any Modicon PLC experience is nice to have
- Experience with Wonderware SCADA is desirable
- Ability to read electrical prints/schematics - i.e. AutoCAD Electrical
- Ability to read/interpret mechanical drawings/blueprints
- Knowledge of VFD's, power distribution is nice to have
- Process Controls environment - i.e. water/steam flowing through these boilers/chillers, pipes, etc.
- Someone who comes from an Integrator experience would be nice to have
- Strong electro-mechanical skills
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Any Windows SQL experience is a plus, but not required
- Ability and willingness to go out on the floor to troubleshoot the equipment is a must have. This is not a typical "sit at your desk" type of role. There will be times where they will be at a desk programming, but a lot of the time will be spent throughout the plant checking the machines, and the PLC's/HMI's/control panels on those machines.
- This person must also possess strong communication skills, and be willing to interact on a daily basis with various 3M people including Engineers, Operators, Construction Workers, Plant Managers, etc. - various levels of the plant!
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
- The ideal candidate will possess an Associates or Bachelors degree in Controls, Electrical Engineering or a related field, but this is not required
- The ideal candidate will possess 2-3 years' experience with Controls Engineering, specifically in a Process Controls and/or Systems Integrator environment, HOWEVER, the Owner/Manager is very willing to train, and is open to more Junior-level candidates as long as the possess a positive attitude, and a willingness to be coached/trainable
- Allen Bradley PLC/HMI programming and troubleshooting experience
- Ability to read electrical prints (mechanical also nice to have)
- Wonderware SCADA experience is nice to have
- Must be willing to spend a lot of their time on the floor / throughout the plant working with the machines, and with various people/Operators throughout the plant
- Must have a desire to work for a small Systems Integrator
- 5-10% occasional travel could arise for other customers outside of 3M who are located out of state, but this is likely rare
