Distribution Designer

Job Description:

The Distribution Designer will be responsible for designing engineering drawings for electrical - civil Overhead or underground distribution systems for Toronto hydro. They will also be required to mentor and train other junior design technicians on the team. They will perform engineering calculations such as voltage drop, pole loading analysis, cable pulling calculation or review the calculations created by design technicians. They will select or verify adequately rated equipment or components such as Transformers, Switches, equipment sizing, etc.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Prepare, create, modify or review civil and electrical design such as, AC/DC electrical schematics, equipment layouts, mechanical drawings, highway crossing, train track crossing, bridge crossing, etc.
• Assemble and verify bills of materials and cost estimates
• Being familiar with SAP is an asset
• Assist project engineer to perform engineering calculations such as voltage drop, pole loading analysis, cable pulling calculation
• Assist project engineer to obtain all necessary permits during design stage
• Escalate design issues to Professional Engineers for review and direction
• Prepare and/or review construction packages, including all required drawings, work instructions, planning documentation, operating systems and regulatory approvals, where required
• Conduct routine field trips to verify or evaluate the condition/state of assets, to determine the feasibility of designs, to take detailed measurements, and take pictures
• Assist project engineer in review of designs, plans, drawings, surveys, studies (load, etc.) and/or calculations

Ideal Candidate will have:

• 3-5 years of Power Distribution Design (Overhead, Underground systems & Civil). 
• Experience working with Local Distribution Companies/ Utility Owners (Toronto Hydro, Alectra, Oakville Hydro, Hydro One, Elexicon, Etc.).
• Experience with AutoCAD & SpidaCalc. 
• Experience performing : Pole loading analysis, Voltage drop calculations, Cable pulling calculations.
• E.I.T or Professional Engineering Designation Preferred.
