Overview:
This position is responsible for materials innovation and creative problem-solving regarding SMC (Sheet molding compound) material formulations to drive improvements in product quality, cost, and customer experience. Consistently develops and applies advanced theories, methods, and research techniques in the investigation and solution of complex and advanced technical problems with new technologies. Analyzes, evaluates, and plans methods of approach to and organizes means to achieve the solution.
Description:
- This position is the subject matter expert for SMC raw materials and formulation chemistry and research for improved performance and optimization.
- This exciting position will complete extensive research projects onsite or through external labs as needed to characterize, optimize, and predict performance of sheet molding compound (SMC) material formulations for specific product manufacturing.
- Characterize SMC raw material properties and SMC formulation properties and variation from receipt through finished process in manufacturing.
- Primarily focuses on chemical properties, but will factor impact of manufacturing environment (temperature, moisture, etc.) on performance.
- Analyze material chemical property variation impact to quality and manufacturing performance.
- Complete research experiments to provide optimal solutions for chemical specifications, ingredients, and formulation composition to improve quality performance and manufacturability of kitchen and bath products.
- Conduct feasibility studies to ensure that implementation of proposed improvements would meet objectives with respect to safety, quality, market demands, competitive costs, and general financial criteria.
- Develop technical reports pertaining to research projects, results, and recommendations.
- Develop and train plant laboratory personnel on any additional chemical raw material or in-process testing needed to ensure raw materials will meet specifications.
- Additional deliverables as assigned.
- Trained on applicable SOPs, LOPs, policies, and procedures.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Chemistry or Materials Science from an ABET accredited program
- PhD preferred.
- Six or more years of relative research work experience
- Experience with Sheet Molding Compound and/or Compression Molding preferred.
- Hands-on approach for research and implementation of innovative solutions.
- Strong analytical skills and judgment
- Excellent technical communication skills
- Past results include successful implementation of material science projects driving improvements in product quality, cost, or another objective.
