Description:
- Provide basic animal care and husbandry for mice and rats. Animal care and husbandry includes cleaning and changing cages. Feeding, watering, observations and record keeping while strictly adhering to established SOPs. Administer special diets, medication and medicated water to rodents as required.
- Assure that animal environment is in compliance with Federal Regulations and other applicable guidelines and standards.
- Maintaining animal rooms and other facility areas in accordance with accepted standards of sanitation. Procedures involved include washing walls, floors, equipment, etc.
- Monitoring rodent colonies for sick, injured or dead animals. Recording and reporting such findings in accordance with SOP and study protocols.
- Operating and maintaining laboratory animal husbandry equipment including, but not limited to laminar flow work benches, ventilated racks, autoclaves and cage wash equipment.
- Technical duties including medical/experimental procedures on rodents, weaning, and euthanasia.
- Proper record keeping including room logs, health reports and autoclave records as required. This will include use of computerized data collections systems for cage census and health monitoring.
- Responsible for stocking supplies. Responsible for cleaning exam rooms and equipment.
- Collaborate with the Research and Early Development teams to conduct proof of concept studies and support capsid engineering discovery studies
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Work schedule includes weekends and some holidays and may vary from week to week.
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED certification is required.
- Equivalent with four years' experience caring for rodents in a research institution, or related environment.
- Certification through the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science Technician Certification Program with two years' experience caring for animals in a veterinary clinic, research institution, or related environment.
- Bachelor's degree in Animal or Biological Science or related field with no experience.
- Any equivalent combination of related experience and/or education approved by Human Resources.
- One year of experience is preferred but eager candidates without experience will be considered.
- AALAS technician certification at the ALAT or LAT levels is preferred but not required.
- Must successfully pass the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification examination by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science within one year of employment.
- Proficiency with injection techniques (SQ, IV, etc.) and necropsy/dissection.
