- Operate vehicle according to all safety standards and in accordance with state law
- Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules
- Drive van to and from extracurricular activities
- Check van for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, mechanical failure, and complete required reports
- Keep records on van mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported
- Keep assigned van clean and fueled
- Learn and adapt to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs
- Supervise students as they board and leave van and cross street
- Communicate with teachers and caregivers on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on bus
- Maintain discipline and report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator
- Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations
- Ensure safety by engaging in pre-trip review/ inspect any vehicle prior to driving
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses
- Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflectors
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not immediately correctable
- Report any hazardous conditions along scheduled routes
- Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office
- Work irregular hours as needed
- Attend and complete required training program to maintain certification status
- Must be able to safely and effectively operate equipment used including, but not limited to: school transportation van, wheelchair lift ramp, locks, seatbelts, harnesses, car seats, special adaptive equipment, safety equipment (flares, reflective signs), fire extinguisher
- Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes
- Maintain emotional control. Continual sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions; pushing, pulling, moderate lifting
- Other duties as assigned
Candidate must be 18 years old and have a high school diploma and a valid Connecticut Driver’s License with a V Endorsement and an excellent driving record. Must consent to and be able to pass alcohol and drug screening. Must be able to complete required bus safety training. Must be able to operate school transportation van and must have an excellent driving record. Must have the ability to follow written and verbal instructions and to communicate effectively. Must have knowledge of student discipline procedures and have the ability to effectively manage student behavior, and maintain professionalism while doing so.
