Lawrence Public Schools – Adult Learning Center Facilitator (Part Time Evenings) FY 24-25 About Lawrence Public Schools and the Adult Learning Center: Lawrence Public Schools is an urban district serving more than 13,000 students, the majority of whom are economically disadvantaged. More than 70% of our students speak a language other than English as their first language. We are committed to ensuring that our students, who have for too long been underserved, are provided with a high quality, free, public education at their local, district schools. The Lawrence Public Schools - Adult Learning Center. has been providing free Adult Basic Education and ESOL classes to the citizens of Lawrence, MA and the surrounding communities since 1967. The ALC provides quality educational services to more than 700 students each year who desire to develop: English language, literacy, numeracy, and technology skills for further education, job training, and better employment. We also provide instruction in civics to help prepare students to pass the USCIS Citizenship Exam. The Vision of the Lawrence Public Schools - Adult Learning Center is to ensure that all English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Adult Basic Education (ABE) students achieve the learning goals they have set upon entry into our program. By improving students’ skills in the areas of academics, language, technology, and workforce development, we will increase their opportunities to enter college, to obtain an industry-recognized credential, to expand their career choices, to enjoy a family-sustaining wage, and to become effective citizens of their community. About the Position: The ALC Facilitator will work part time in the evenings for four (4) evenings Monday- Thursday. They will be responsible for managing the evening program. The program is focused on assisting adult learners prepare for the GED or the HiSET high school equivalency credential; to assist immigrants in the acquisition of English language skills; and to assist adult learners in transitioning to post-secondary education or training. The Facilitator will ensure that all evening staff is focused on high quality, standards-based instruction that is student-centered, and includes appropriate supports, and necessary accommodations. In addition, the facilitator will work collaboratively with the data and enrollment team, as well as the assessment team to make sure that all adult learners in the Evening Program are pre tested, and post tested. This is a requirement for all programs that receive funding from MA-DESE-ACLS funded programs. Reports to: Principal of the Adult Learning Center. The educator will work collaboratively with ALC advisors, Family Literacy facilitators, other ALC educators, clerks, and support staff, as well as the School’s Leadership Team. Responsibilities in conjunction with the ALC Principal will include, but not be limited to, the following: Ensure that students are receiving high quality instruction, remediation when necessary, and are able to demonstrate mastery of academic content; Ensure that educators plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences and meet the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education, and required Curriculum Frameworks for ABE & ESOL; Recruit, and provide program orientation for new adult learners; Establish and communicate clear expectations for staff and students for all program learning activities, including the scheduling of a monthly staff meeting; Collect, review, and forward all evening educator’s lesson plans to the ALC Principal; Provide for and arrange coverage when night staff may be out; Collect and certify weekly teacher hours, and submit payroll records to the evening clerk; Communicate effectively, consistently, and professionally with students, and colleagues; Provide support, accommodations, and attention to all teachers and students; Maintain and update accurate program records using LACES (attendance, intake and orientation, pre & post assessments, follow up documentation of exited students) as required by ALC - ABE program, and ACLS; • Communicate high expectations for adult learners’ academic and social behaviors; • Enforce and maintain classroom and school wide discipline in accordance with the rules contained in the ALC Student Handbook and forward recommendations to the ALC Principal; Participate in school and community events, such as seminars, field trips, community forums, weekly ALC meetings, professional development opportunities, and end of the year ceremonies, including graduation; Keep current with developments in the teaching of adult learners; Complete the fifteen (15) hour The Art of Teaching, part of the Foundations for New Staff course through SABES required for all teachers new to the adult education (AE) field in the first year of employment; Comply with school, district, city, and statewide policies, regulations, and laws; Adhere to rules of student confidentiality; Become Best Plus certified to provide testing when necessary; Complete other duties as assigned. Key Competencies: Knowledge: Familiarity with the field of Adult Basic Education, and HSE programs and exams; Sound understanding of adult learning theory; Solid knowledge base of math/science instruction, and or reading/writing/social studies instruction; Strong foundation in second language acquisition and linguistics; Demonstrated proficiency using digital literacy tools, as well as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Knowledge of Massachusetts’ DESE-ACLS program guidelines, performance indicators & benchmarks; College and Career Readiness Standards for Adults; Familiarity with AE/ESOL assessments: MAPT, BEST Plus, TABE CLASS E – Reading/Writing; Experience with SABES professional development courses. Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree Required/ Master’s Degree preferred; Valid Massachusetts Teaching License required, preferably in ABE, ESOL, or ESL, or in a core content area (Reading, Math, ELA, Science, History); with a deep understanding of RETELL obligations, and ability to meet SEI requirements for MA educators; At least three (3) years’ experience teaching adults, preferably ABE or ESOL; Current Authorization to work in the United States.
