Our Energy team have a new opportunity for a Senior Power Systems Engineer to join our ’Centre of Excellence’ Grid Connections team in Melbourne. As part of an agile team, you will primarily focus on developing and delivering grid connection projects and support the broader Energy business within Australia & New Zealand.
Our highly experience team of specialists are actively involved across both development and construction phase of the projects (grid-connected and off-grid) in the renewable energy sector, oil & gas, industrial and mining industries. As part of the team, you will be working on a variety of challenging grid connection projects with emerging technologies, including utility scale wind, solar, battery, pumped hydro and hybrid plants across the entire NEM (National Electricity Market) in Australia. This role offers a great opportunity to be a part of the fast-moving energy transformation.
This is an exciting time for AECOM’s Energy business as the energy market, and Renewable Energy in particular, continues to grow. Grid connection is becoming a critical area where proponents (utility providers and private investors and developers) are seeking specialized grid connection and feasibility study services across various life cycles from siting to feasibility stage through to commissioning and on-going compliance monitoring during the operations phase.

As part of this opportunity, the Senior Power Systems Engineer will:
- Undertake grid interconnection and system planning studies for grid scale wind, solar, energy storage and hybrid generating systems and large loads such as mineral and process plants
- Deliver concept design and grid due diligence for new connections
- Support the business strategic growth priorities around ESG, sustainable legacies and energy transition.
- Support and deliver supporting new pursuits and opportunities, such as drafting proposal, EOI and cost/fee estimates.
Job Description
As a successful Senior Power Systems Engineer in the Connection Services team, you will be motivated and result-focused engineer, with ideally over 5 years of Electrical industry experience. Your proven Power Systems experience will equip you with a working knowledge of PSS/E, Power Factory and ETAP, ideally within an Engineering Design Consultancy, OEM or Utility Network Planning and Connections team.
- Graduate qualifications in Electrical and/or Senior Power Systems Engineering.
- Proven and confident hands-on capabilities with respect to commonly used power system analysis tools with a particular focus on PSS/E, PSCAD, Dig Silent Power Factory and ETAP.
- Ability to analyze and solve complex engineering problems, possessing strong technical acumen to pioneer innovative and competitive technical solutions.
- Basic understanding of NER s5.2 and s5.3 technical requirements alongside AEMO’s Power Systems Modelling guidelines.
- Basic understanding of control and protection principles of high voltage substation equipment, transmission lines, generators, transformers, reactive equipment, etc.
- Exceptional levels of written and oral communication.
Skills Summary
- Handling projects from feasibility studies to concepts and detailed designs.
- Proficiency across relevant AS Standards, National Electricity Rules, NSP standards, technical rules and regulations with design and installation of Electrical infrastructure.
- Developing engineering concepts for integrating solar, wind and battery energy storage.
- Performing cable rating studies in CYMCAP.
- Experienced with performing OE duties involving design review and site inspections.
- Liaising, coordinating and communicating with key stakeholders including Clients, OEMs, NSPs and Contractors.
- Supporting grid compliance testing activities as required by the project specifications, standards, codes and approved inspection and test plans (ITPs).
- Ability to work in a team demonstrated by delivering major renewable energy projects with a multidiscipline team of engineers.
- Well-developed communication skills oral and written - technical report writing and presentation skills.

- Basic understanding of PSCAD.
