Job Summary

The electronic technician fabricates, installs, maintains, troubleshoots, modifies, programs, routs, removes, controls and repairs communication systems including Operational Television – Digital (OTV-D), Broadband Communications Distribution System (BCDS), Timing and Countdown Services, Transmission Systems, Telephones and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Voice Communication Systems.

This is a represented staff position with the IBEW Union.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Install, test, repair, fire stop and maintain unified power systems, converters (DC to AC or vice versa), battery plant, amplifiers, mixers, cable rack fabrication, spacing and installation, radio antenna and grounding, build and install cable harnesses.
  • Install, remove, control and replace serial digital closed circuit surveillance television and webcams systems in support of spacecraft, payload and security operations.
  • Install and maintain camera control systems for trim controls (pan, tilt, zoom etc.)
  • Install and maintain mid-split-level television and broadband communication distribution system, including Channel 60 and Operational Television (OTV) Webpage.
  • Fabricate, maintain, modify, troubleshoot, repair, test, align, calibrate and operate; automation and control mechanisms, fiber optics, close circuit TV, radio frequency (FR) head end and distribution, broadcast production, pre and post production, video servers, public address and warning, video and audio conferencing, high definition and serial digital TV, switching and distribution, wide area networks, local area networks, pressurized pan and tilts, pressurized lighting and cameras, batteries, power supplies and video surveillance.
  • Install, troubleshoot and maintain telephones, VoIP, end instruments and peripheral telephones units.
  • Install, troubleshoot and maintain peripheral telecommunications equipment such as but not limited to; headsets, outdoor speakers and ringers, internet telephones, analog telephone adapters, and hearing-impaired devices.
  • Assess and restock inventory, refurbish telephones and peripherals, excess damaged or unrepairable property and perform inspections of equipment as necessary.
  • Read and interpret work orders, drawings, schematics and notes.
  • Fabrication, installation, problem diagnosis, repair and maintenance of telecommunication systems and equipment.
  • Provide depot level maintenance for voice communication systems and equipment. Including corrective and preventative maintenance at the LRU and component level.
  • Process support request requirements for Paging and Operational Intercommunication System (OIS) including cable and equipment fabrication. Including the installation and repair of headsets, cable fabrication and connector potting.
  • Install setup and operate video equipment and portable sound reinforcement.
  • Perform software upgrades on sustaining systems.
  • Install and maintain handheld, fixed and mobile radio frequency (RF) radios.
  • Fabricate, install, operate, maintain and troubleshoot voice communication cable systems and racks.
  • Install, operate, and troubleshoot Countdown and Timing systems including Inter-range Instrumentation Group (IRIG) time codes for transferring timing information and Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) receivers designed for precision timing used to timestamp video, audio recordings, synchronizing data processing systems and for displaying time during launch countdown.
  • Install, maintain, test, and troubleshoot transmission systems used to transmit analog or digital data signals over copper wire, optical fiber, Ethernet or other transmission medium.
  • Provide, update and maintain all required documentation, reports, and logs etc., manually or in electronic databases.
  • Make recommendations to improve work quality, efficiencies, and productivity.
  • Adhere to OSHA, NASA, Company and customer safety requirements.
  • Assist in training others, as applicable.
  • Travel: <10%
  • Ability to start and finish a wide range of cable and wire activities independently.
  • Understanding of electrical theory, exercising independent judgment in performing circuit diagnostics analysis.
  • Ability to read and have a comprehensive understanding of electronic schematics.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with ability to pass a NASA background investigation.
  • Must be able to pass an initial and random drug testing.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • May require up to a Florida Class B Commercial Driver’s License.

Education and Experience

  • Associate of Science*or Technical Trade School* in Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer Science or related field, plus 4 years related experience or successful completion of a State or Military approved bona fide work-related apprenticeship program recognized by the US Department of of Labor.
  • Experience may be substituted for Education: 1.5 years related experience is equivalent to 1 year of formal education.

Physical Requirements

  • Requires working indoors and outdoors. Outdoor conditions may be in cold and hot temperatures, high humidity, and windy conditions.
  • Certain job assignments require special precautions and/or protective gear or clothing due to potential risk for such sources as moving machinery, chemicals, and electrical hazards, working from special rigging, working from heights, climbing ladders and other work platforms and working in confined and small spaces restricting physical movement.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 - 50 pounds and work on uneven surfaces and stand for long periods.
  • Requires repetitive movement, bending, stooping, twisting and working in awkward positions.
  • Potential exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable. Lighting conditions may be inadequate in some work locations.
  • Ability to recognize or interpret differences in wire and cable colors.
  • Ability to receive and transmit auditory information using telecommunication or electronic devices.
