Job Description
African Services Committee (ASC) is a recognized leader in providing high-quality representation to non-citizens in all five boroughs of New York City, particularly members of the African diaspora. Our staff of over 30 employees provides holistic immigration law, housing, case management, health (including mental health), nutrition and ESOL services.
As part of an initiative led by the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs to provide immigration legal services for unrepresented New Yorkers, including newly arrived migrants and asylees, ASC seeks a Staff Attorney to join its practice. The Staff Attorney must have an interest in or experience with immigration law. The Staff Attorneys will provide full and limited representation for clients before USCIS and/or EOIR in diverse matters, primarily focusing on various forms of affirmative applications or relief (TPS, green cards, naturalization, etc.).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide direct and limited representation in diverse cases;
Work as part of a team with two Legal Advocates to deliver comprehensive, high-quality immigration services;
Meet all filing targets in a high-volume, high-metric practice (600 consultations/ applications per year);
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Admission to any state bar;
Immigration law experience, including law school clinics and/or internships, of at least one year in duration, or similar experience in related field with substantial direct client engagement;
Excellent writing, analytical, and organizational skills;
Ability to think critically and creatively about legal strategy and solutions;
Ability to work independently and manage volunteers and interns, as needed;
Ability to manage a heavy caseload
Working proficiency in Spanish and/or French is highly encouraged. This will be tested orally.
