Position Summary
Assists in day-to-day farming operations of the Horticulture Teaching and Research Center and assist on other South Campus Farms with guidance from research center farm managers, where various crops are grown, ranging from row crops to fruit trees and vegetables. The successful candidate will manage and oversee undergraduate student employees and temporary employees. As well as the maintenance of field plots and farm facilities to support land grant missions (research, teaching, and outreach). Daily operations include but are not limited to purchasing supplies and parts, maintaining equipment/buildings, mowing grass areas, applying pesticides, pruning and maintaining orchards, and communicating with Farm Managers to promote the efficiency of operations and project management. This position requires a Certified pesticide applicators License as well as a medical certification to drive vehicles over 10,001 pounds.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Horticulture or Crop and Soil Science or agricultural field related to the area of employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in supervision, all areas of farm work/production within specific animal groups and/or crops related to the area of employment; experience in computer usage; and knowledge of farm equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; the job requires a Pest Applicators Certification.
Desired Qualifications
Working knowledge of tractors and associated implements; expert knowledge of equipment, tools, methods, and techniques used in the operation and maintenance of agricultural/special equipment; possession or attainment within six months of a medical certificate in order to drive a vehicle with GVWR of 10,000-26,001 pounds; MSU tractor and forklift operator's permit; Michigan Pesticide Applicator's certificate with categories 1A, 1B, 1C, 3B, and 6; knowledge of basic computer terminology and operations and the ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and the Internet; ability to work year round in variable or severe conditions.
