LOCATION:New York Resettlement Office Community Farms
START DATE: May29, 2023
DURATION: May2023 - (preferred October 2022)
REPORTS TO: This position works directly with the Foodand Agriculture Coordinator.
BACKGROUND: The International RescueCommittee (IRC) responds to the world's worst
humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Atwork in over 40
countries and 29 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity, and hope, the IRCleads the way from
harm to the home.
The IRC in New York's food and agriculture program focuses onincreasing community involvement in their local food systems, through hands-on trainingand food accessibility programming. Food and agriculture programming takesplace at the two urban farms in the South Bronx and Woodside, Queens.
SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK:
The Food and Agriculture Intern will support the IRC Food andAgriculture Coordinator in managing this programming and organizing seasonalfood production.
In addition to food production, the intern will assist with organizingthe weekly farmer's market, food distribution, and other educational andcommunity activities.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Intern will learn how to effectively manage food and agriculture programsacross a wide
network.
2. Intern will learn about local food systems and access to healthy food.
3. Intern will learn how to engage community members around food securityprogramming.
Qualifications
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Create, curate, & facilitate a high-impact, multi-platform communicationsstrategy to expand
communications, partnerships, education, outreach & relationships for NewRoots Community
Farm Bronx, and by extension New Roots Community Garden Queens.
Optional:
• Ability to travel and work onsite at a community farm in Bronx or Queens
• Contribute to overall site maintenance and food production activities
• Assist with harvest and distribution through donation partners and weekly farm stand;
• Support Coordinator in organizing work-day activities and support volunteers on site;
• Support educational activities onsite
• Assist the Food and Agriculture Coordinator and Farm Assistants with ongoingprogram tasks
as needed.
