Hydroponic Farm Manager

WesleyLife Meals on Wheels is a non-profit that impacts food insecurity and social isolation by delivering around 1,000 hot, delicious, and healthy meals to older adults and military veterans in Central Iowa. We're seeking someone to develop and maintain our hydroponic farm to further our mission.

As theMeals on Wheels Hydroponic Farm Manager you will:

• Plan and implement farm production schedules including seeding, transplanting, plant health monitoring, harvesting, and packaging.


• Daily production duties including cleaning, sanitation, light-duty maintenance, equipment and workstation setup and preparation, and data entry related to the primary daily production.


• Operate hydroponic system, including filling water reservoirs, nutrient mixing, and lighting control.


• Perform system maintenance as needed, including but not limited to troubleshooting and maintenance, equipment assembly, and calibration.


• Regularly monitor plant health and risk including pests or disease, pruning, and environmental monitoring.


• Plan and lead crop cycle planning and annual farm plan. Analyze yields and adjust for expected outputs. Monitor and is accountable for results.


• Plan and coordinate production schedules with vendors to maximize production opportunities.


• Develop and maintain policies and procedures for the Hydroponic Farm.


• Maintain adherence to food safety, quality control, worker safety, and other safety procedures.


• Regularly train and lead volunteers of all ages who will support the operation of the farm by cleaning and harvesting crops.

Position Requirements:

• Valid Iowa driver's license.


• Current vehicle insurance.


• Ability to speak, read, and write in English.


• Three to five years of full-time work experience as a hydroponic grower with knowledge of indoor farming methods and industry.


• Basic knowledge of HVAC and environmental control systems.


• Strong knowledge of plant health and nutrition and understanding of disease management and pests


• Bachelor's degree in hydroponics, greenhouse production, plant production, or a related field is required.


• Experience with food safety and Iowa Food Handlers certification or the ability to complete within three months of hire.

During 2023, the Meals on Wheels program will move from our current location at 944 18th Street in Des Moines into a newly remodeled space in the Drake University neighborhood. This move will require significant focus for the Hydroponic Farm Manager as we triple our meal capacity and offer programming to combat isolation.
