What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safety Manager position at AGC of California?

Summary: The Safety Manager will be responsible for developing initiatives for the Association and its membership. The Safety Manager will provide and manage the planning, organization, delivery, execution and evaluation of safety and regulatory functions, resources, events and trainings. This position is critical to the success of the construction industry by leading the design and implementation of innovative safety and health strategy and initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: included but not limited to the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Reviews all public policy, regulation changes and industry practice being proposed or conducted by state or federal agencies affecting occupational health and safety, and workers’ compensation. Maintains working knowledge of public policy creation and how it is shaped at the legislative and regulatory level.
  • Manages the relationship between federal, state and local agencies overseeing or engaged in safety regulations. Participates in meetings with written or verbal comment or testimony on issues pertaining to the construction industry.
  • Manages relationship with Cal/OSHA. Attends Cal/OSHA Standards Board Meetings and advisory committee meetings held through Cal/OSHA groups. Leads working/advisory groups when necessary. Works with board members and staff to advocate for the safety standards that should be implemented within the commercial construction industry.
  • Conducts research to identify ideal opportunities to introduce policy makers to AGC of California’s objectives and mission.
  • Manages coalitions with other construction associations/members in the areas of safety and health.
  • Works with AGC of America to advocate for regulations and policies that have positive impact on the construction industry in the areas of health and safety standards.
  • Develops and presents trainings to the Construction Education Foundation (CEF) on topics, materials and certification courses that will allow our training program to have a robust suite of classes offered in the area of Safety.
  • Oversees and staff’s AGC’s internal Safety and Health Council, holding regular meetings and works with volunteer leaders to develop agenda and secure speakers/presentations. Follows up on any action items or working group needs.
  • Assists the AVP with support and information around legislation involving safety regulations and protocol.
  • Works with the Communications & Marketing team to provide material and content around current events/issues that need to be communicated to membership.
  • Develops and presents safety related services, tools and resources for AGC of California members including but not limited to template IIPP’s, toolbox talks, safety standards pamphlets and seminars. Responsible for conducting market research to determine industry needs around safety.
  • Provides technical support to member companies with safety, health, workers’ compensation issues, information and updates to new policies and regulations.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position supervises the Policy Coordinator position and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations’ policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance including disciplinary action when applicable; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) in Occupational Safety & Health or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred or 3-4 years’ experience in construction or safety; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: A current CA driver’s license and proof of auto insurance are required.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $95,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
