Role Overview
The Production Engineer is responsible for assisting the Plant Manager to oversee operations of the plant, as well as direct the activities of the Plant Project Engineer. Key objectives are to ensure the plant meets all safety and environmental regulations as well as all quality and operational goals of the business. Responsibilities range from managing plant process optimization and improvement efforts to developing, monitoring, and stewarding plant KPIs. The role requires a hands-on, knowledgeable, highly responsive team player who is a self-starter, resourceful, and brings creativity and strong interpersonal skills to the organization.
Primary Responsibilities
1. Manage optimization of all plant equipment and process flows within the Regenyx* facility
2. Lead troubleshooting and resolution of operational issues; utilize the Management of Change process where applicable
3. Monitor plant KPIs ranging from production performance to product quality; identify areas of improvement and drive implementation of solutions
4. Investigate and diagnose causes of downtime, integrate learnings into development of subsequent run plans to optimize production
5. Work closely with Engineering, Operations and Maintenance in troubleshooting / improving:
o PID Loops
o Control Errors
o Instrumentation Calibration errors and drift
o Plant reliability
o Equipment maintenance and uptime
6. Monitor plant operating costs, identify opportunities to capture efficiencies and take action to reduce costs
7. Provide work direction to Plant Project Engineer for planning and implementing plant improvements, including required interactions with equipment vendors and outside contractors
8. Assist Plant Manager in hiring, onboarding, and training Operators
9. Drive improvements in Plant Documentation, including SOPs, Work Instructions and Checklists
10. Participate in Plant Risk & Safety Assessments, ensuring compliance with applicable safety and environmental regulations and laws
Qualifications
Experience/Knowledge
• Minimum 5 years of experience in chemical manufacturing industry
• Strong understanding of chemical process engineering
• Excellent judgment regarding health, safety, environmental and fire protection risks with emphasis on injury prevention and business continuity
• Experience in a PSM regulated facility is preferred
• Familiar with Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Management of Change (MOC)
• Demonstrated ability to drive and implement process improvements
• Skilled in root cause analysis
• Experience managing plant improvement projects from the design phase through implementation and commissioning
• Development of conceptual design alongside engineering and operations
• Knowledge of controls systems and evaluation of pumps, control valves, and instrumentation
Education/Training
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably Chemical Engineering
Personal Qualifications
• Self-starter - must be able to complete goals and objectives with minimal direct supervision
• Proven ability to work in a team environment and across functions without direct authority
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
• Self-confident, proactive, and strong problem-solving skills
Position Mechanics
Reports to: Plant Manager
Type: Salaried; full time with full benefits
Work Hours: Generally, 8:00am - 5:00pm; this is a multi-shift, 24/7 operation, so there will be evening and weekend work
Staff: Project Engineer (1 direct report) plus Plant Operators (managed by Pant Manager)
Location: Tigard, OR
Work environment: professional office and manufacturing
Travel: minimal
Physical Demands: Varied between work performed in an office environment to that of equipment operators
