SUMMARY: 

Responsible interpreting for students who are deaf and hard of hearing in the full range of complex communication situations occurring in a pre-kindergarten through adult education.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:   

  • Provides interpreting services between students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing, staff and other students. Conducts themselves in a professional, non-obtrusive manner while in this role.
  • Stays informed of students communication profiles, and impact of hearing loss as related to comprehension of English and interprets/transliterates accordingly.
  • Determines the best distance, lighting and angle for student viewing, consulting with student and teacher as necessary.
  • Participates as part of the instructional team; interprets directions and assists in providing continuity of instruction to students as identified and directed by their IEP.
  • Participates in the IEP meeting as part of the team and ensures that interpreting is provided by another interpreter for communication as needed.
  • Provides tutoring as directed by the Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing.
  • Facilitates and clarifies appropriate social interaction with peers.
  • Provides for one’s own professional growth through ongoing reading, workshops, internet information, seminars, conferences, course work and participation in staff development activities.
  • Uses preparation time to become familiar with subject matter and specialized sign vocabulary.
  • Communicates to Coordinator of Evaluation and Student Services absences for themselves or student, and follows school policy regarding communication with appropriate school staff.
  • Remains current on and follows both the RID Code of Professional Conduct and the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment Professional Conduct Guidelines.
  • Upholds and enforces state, county, and school laws, policies, and rules.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Special Programs.

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Educational Interpreter I: Interpreting experience preferred.

 

Educational Interpreter II: Associates Degree and two years related experience (classroom or deaf community) and/or training; or equivalent combination of education.

 

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: 

Educational Interpreter I: Nationally certification as an interpreter or EIPA minimum of 3.0 and pass the written exam and minimum of 3.5 within 3 years of hire. Ongoing testing required.

 

Educational Interpreter II: EIPA score at or above 3.5

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Not applicable

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS: 

Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures and instructional manuals.  Ability to design and write professional development plans, reports and data entry procedures.  Ability to effectively present professional development and training and respond to questions from groups of educators, trainees, media, administrators and organization members.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and in the display and interpretation of data. Ability to apply basic concepts of statistical analysis, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to interpret and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work related issues and problems.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

 

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

 

Ability to implement a flexible work schedule to meet the reporting deadlines.   Proficiency with Microsoft applications such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint required.  Ability to perform duties with a high level of detail and accuracy. Ability to self-monitor and manage multiple tasks while working individually and with members of a group.

The employee will occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds such as boxes of materials.  The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as furniture or boxes of materials.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, listen and/or reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision.  Some driving required.  Duties of the job require frequent use of a computer monitor and related equipment.

Office environment with limited exposure to environmental conditions.  The noise level in this environment is quiet to loud depending upon the activity in the particular part of the day. Frequent interruptions and immediate attention to unexpected situations are expected.  

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

Educational Interpreter I, 181 Days, 7.5 hours, Sped I Pay Scale

Educational Interpreter II, 181 Days, 8 Hours, SPED II Pay Scale

 

The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full time employment during the school year.  Conditions of employment adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.

 

EVALUATION: 

Performance of this job evaluated annually according to Board Policy.
