Summary:

To support the university and CEHBS goal of quality programs, the position of education specialist supports the AAMU Teach Program in the recruitment, retention, and training of teacher education candidates on the pathway to becoming ALSDE licensed teachers in secondary STEM classrooms. The education specialist will work with AAMUTeach students to help them understand degree plans and state certification requirements. The education specialist provides each student with personal attention and support. This position is grant funded for four years. Continuation beyond the grant funding period is dependent upon the department's acquisition of additional funding sources.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In addition to the traditional advising tasks?such as ensuring that students take the correct courses in the correct sequence in order to fulfill degree plan requirements, the AAMUTeach advisor may also be responsible for the following:

  • Works with departments to create or modify existing degree plans for students.
  • Recruits potential students into the AAMUTeach program through mailings, presentations about the program, individual conversations, and other means.
  • Serves on AAMUTeach committees.
  • Meets regularly with STEM departmental advisors to ensure a complete understanding of how the AAMUTeach option can be added to STEM degrees for interested students.
  • Serves as advocates for students in policy decisions.
  • Represents AAMUTeach interests at university advisors' meetings.
  • Interprets policies and procedures from ALSDE and assist with communicating the changes and updates with students and faculty.
  • Assists with data reports for state and national accreditation.
  • Develops and maintains systems to monitor the progress of the clinical experiences for candidates through admission, retention, and completion of the professional teacher education and certification programs.
  • Assists and provides support on special projects as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in the department.

Job Requirements:


Minimum Position Requirements (including certifications, licenses, etc.):

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree, education field preferred.
  • Must have demonstrated effective communication skills.
  • Must have at least 2 years of experience providing academic support to adult students.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Must be able to travel when needed.
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of the phases for acquiring a bachelor's degree from matriculation to graduation.

Essential Functions:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Skill in the use of spreadsheets and related software applications for maintaining records.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Advanced writing and editorial skills.
  • Knowledge of principles and procedures related to academic advising and counseling procedures.
  • Knowledge of teacher education admission, retention, and completion policies and procedures.
  • Ability to contribute to the academic development of students.
  • Ability to contribute to the development of mentoring initiatives.

SALARY:

The salary for each position is based on the grade/tier in which the position is placed, and the salary within the grade/tier is based on the number of years of related experience or number of years in the hiring rank.
