The Interpreter is responsible for assisting Administrative, clerical, income maintenance, social workers and child support staff in translating histories, current problems, personal data and materials from English to Spanish for the clients, which could also include written translations. Interpreters will ensure the same quantity and quality of services are provided to the Spanish-speaking clients as to the English speaking. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The Interpreter will provide direct interpretation services for interaction/communication between Spanish-speaking clients and English-speaking DSS staff; assist all units within the agency with interpreting/translating/transcribing data for Spanish-speaking clients—both in the agency as well as home visits and other locations within the community (jail court and schools); translate English forms and materials into Spanish; write letters and make phone calls, (as we are the Spanish lines for the agency) to Hispanic clients regarding specific services and/or needs.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities: Fluent ability in speaking and writing in both English and Spanish. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of idioms and regional differences within the Spanish speaking population located in Alamance County as well as the English speaking population. Ability to understand and accurately interpret the nuance of both language and culture in both English and Spanish. Ability to perform bidirectional consecutive and simultaneous interpretation and sight translation.Ability to direct calls received from clients to the worker and translate for them over the phone and also communicate with the workers within the Department.Ability to translate forms and letters from English to Spanish and Spanish to English with the aid of a personal computer.Significant knowledge of the ethics of interpreting.Ability to work as part of a team and handle multiple tasks. Minimum Training and Experience Requirements: Graduation from high school or GED and two years of experience in interpreting and translating English and Spanish in a setting that requires a knowledge of the programs or services.
