JOB TITLE: Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant
DEPARTMENT: Clinical Services
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: An exempt position responsible for providing cardiovascular care services, including assessing and managing patients in the outpatient and inpatient setting following established standards and practices. Works closely with physicians and other clinicians in a team approach to patient care, providing assistance based on the needs of the organization.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to APP Manager
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts maximum 20lbs and frequently carries items weighing up to 10lbs. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stress in emergency situations.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Combination of exam rooms, medical offices, clinic, imaging and inpatient environment. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assess health status including state of wellness, compliance with care plan and determines appropriate diagnosis and therapeutic plan.
- Provides acute and chronic care including performing a complete history and physical examination and records findings. Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
- Interprets and integrates data to determine diagnosis and therapeutic plan.
- Provides monitoring and continuity of care between physician visits.
- Instructs patient/family regarding disease processes, medications and treatments. Educates patients regarding health and illness prevention. Recommends community resources to meet patient and family needs.
- Collaborates with physicians in hospital, clinic and office settings as needed in managing acute and long-term medical needs of patients. Manages and reviews patient records, charts and other pertinent information. Triages patient telephone calls and provides consultation for patients and staff members.
- Performs daily rounding on hospital patients, monitoring therapy, and providing continuity of care as able.
- Responds to emergencies, performs BLS and implements ACLS as needed.
- Serves as a role model and resource. Attends and participates in required meetings.
- Participates in professional development and activities and maintains professional affiliations.
- Works up to two holidays per year, as need dictates coverage requirements.
- Maintains and protects patient rights, privacy, and confidentiality.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Knowledge of professional clinical practices and guidelines to provide and evaluate patient care.
- Knowledge of acute and chronic care protocols and how to assess patient health.
- Knowledge of how to use medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish/maintain a safe work environment.
- Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations, guidelines and procedures to administer patient care.
- Knowledge of computer systems and applications.

- Proficiency in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care.
- Proficiency in taking medical histories to assess medical conditions and interprets findings.

- Proficiency in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, staff and the public.
- Proficiency in appropriate documentation in selecting appropriate level of service for patient presentation and condition.
- Ability to maintain quality control standards.

- Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
- Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical and office staff and the public.

Qualifications
Education:
Preferred: Master’s degree in designated area preferred.
Minimum: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or accredited school for physician assistant programs. Completion of an accredited Nursing Practitioner/Physician Assistant program.
Experience:
Preferred: Two years of nurse practitioner/physician assistant experience
Required: Three years of professional experience
Certificate/License: Possession of current Alaska state Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license, Certification as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant, current BLS and ACLS certifications.
