Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium has a hiring preference for qualified Alaska Native and American Indian applicants pursuant to P.L. 93-638 Indian Self Determination Act.

Summary:

Under general direction, facilitates nursing education opportunities within the hospital, in particular, new graduate nurse training programs and coordination of simulation training. Works with the Director of Nursing Education to ensure a competency based orientation using simulation that provides for the demonstration of age-related growth and the development necessary to provide adequate service and assure the safety of all patients and visitors.

Responsibilities:

Using evidence-based nursing practice and materials, promotes quality patient care and outcomes through coordinated efforts with other nursing and multi-disciplinary professionals to support the growth and advancement of our newly graduated nurses from beginner to expertise.

Provides competency based orientation for each new nursing staff member, evaluating their progress and ensuring a high quality and cost effective orientation program. Assesses and sets learning objectives for each new member and provides specific education to staff with individual learning needs.

Assumes responsibility and facilitates continuing education and professional development of the nursing staff. Contributes to the educational instruction of others throughout the organization and to outside sources. Actively participates in scholarly and professional activities. Maintains clinical expertise by networking within specialty area of practice.

Collaborates with the Competency Manager to maintain educational records and competency verification.

Promotes high quality standards for nursing care based on a primary nursing model and develops and revises procedures based on current nursing practices. Works closely with all nursing staff as a clinical preceptor to evaluate hands on patient care and provide for the safety of our patients, visitors, and staff.

Maintains professional clinical skills and uses simulation effectively. Functions as an expert clinician and resource for new graduate nurses, preceptors, and educators.

Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement and the development of departmental goals and objectives.

Demonstrates respect and appreciation for coworkers and customers regardless of background, race, age, gender, disability, values, lifestyle, perspective, or interests and promotes positive working relationships.

Conveys information and ideas effectively and clearly while maintaining discretion and confidentiality.

Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

· Knowledge of Alaska Tribal Health System, ANTHC, and Alaska Native culture(s) and politics.

· Knowledge of professional nursing principals, practices, concepts, and procedures.

· Knowledge of recording observations, nursing interventions, therapeutic measures, multi-system monitoring data, and other data relevant to the patient care setting.

· Knowledge of relevant educational content and appropriate methods of delivery and the ability to develop and facilitate relevant and effective education for adult learners.

· Skill in oral and written communication.

· Skill in assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the plan of care and the plan of care is patient and/or family centered, developmentally and age appropriate, and culturally relevant.

· Skill in initializing treatments, medications, emergency, and resuscitative measures based on appropriate utilization of procedures and protocols.

· Skill in collaborating in developing and evaluating standards of practice and competency standards for staff members.

· Skill in development, implementation, and evaluation of educational activities.

· Skill in managing multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meeting deadlines.

· Skill in appropriate delegation to staff members.

· Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others.

· Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of applications.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

A Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

Non-supervisory – Five (5) years registered nursing experience, three (3) of which must be in a combination of Critical Care and Medical-Surgical.

Supervisory – None

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

· Current registered nurse license in the State of Alaska.

· Current Basic Life Support (BLS) card.

PREFERRED EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

· A Master’s Degree in Nursing or the ability to complete MS/MSN within 48 months of hire date is preferred.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

· Experience in the Alaska Tribal Health System.

· Experience with developing and conducting staff and patient education programs.

PREFERRED CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

· National certification is preferred.

· Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) card is preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

· Depending on the needs of the organization , some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain additional certifications or training in one or more specialty areas.
