DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves assisting in the operation, repair, maintenance, and cleaning of the wastewater treatment plant, equipment, and grounds. These duties involve routine manual work requiring physical exertion and a willingness to perform these tasks at times under adverse weather conditions. Employees in this class perform a variety of indoor and outdoor work, at times working alone or in a group depending on location or nature of the assignment. The work involves the use of manual tools on routine tasks and occasionally the use of small power tools. The work is performed under continuing supervision, or their activities are subject to frequent inspection. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

• Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of buildings and grounds;
• Digs trenches with pick and shovel for the repair of water mains, storm sewers, culvert pipes, or driveway culverts, back-fills excavation after repairs have been completed, load waste material into truck with hand shovel;
• Performs a wide variety of manual tasks on sewer equipment; cleaning process tanks and other similar tasks;
• Assists in the processing and removal of grease;
• Sweeps walks, cuts grass with a push-type lawnmower or power trimmer, removes refuse and papers from grounds, rakes leaves for extended periods of time, shovels snow from walkways and tanks;
• Loads, unloads, and lifts materials;
• Shovels snow from walkways and tanks, spreads salt on walkways, tanks, and various other problem spots caused by snow or ice;
• Cleans and paints pumps, piping, buildings, and other equipment;
• May assist in the operation of plant machinery and equipment;
• Operates automotive equipment when assigned.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

• Ability to understand and follow oral instructions;
• Ability and willingness to perform a variety of heavy manual tasks;
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods often under adverse weather conditions;
• Ability to learn and use small hand tools;
• Ability to operate certain small maintenance equipment for cleaning and maintenance tasks;
• Ability to work on ladders, scaffolding, and in confined spaces and balance under various conditions;
• Ability to work in a variety of conditions involving odor and hazardous environments;
• Ability to routinely lift up to 50 lbs. or loads above on occasion;
• Ability to comply with District safety programs, including confined space and lockout /tag-out procedures
• Dependability;
• Good physical condition.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, or high school individual education plan diploma.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Eligibility for and possession of a valid New York State driver’s license at time of appointment and continuously thereafter.
