Job Summary:

This work is primarily performed on C-130 and other fixed wing aircraft. Aircraft Mechanics / Technicians inspect, diagnose, repair and monitor aircraft and aircraft systems such as structure, landing gear, flight surfaces and controls, engines, power, and electrical/ electronic systems and components as assigned to work centers. The mechanic receives technical guidance from team leads and or supervisors, which may be more senior mechanics, and based on skill and ability may be assigned as team leads for relevant tasks. Uses hand tools, power tools, machines and ancillary equipment required to perform assigned task. Read and interpret service and manufacturer maintenance manuals, instructions, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data, and other specifications to determine feasibility and method of maintaining and repairing malfunctioning aircraft, aircraft systems, or ancillary equipment. Avionics Mechanics/ Technicians inspect, diagnose, repair, and monitor systems structure, gear, controls, power and electrical/ electronic systems and components as assigned. The technician receives technical guidance from team leads and or supervisors, which may be more senior technicians, and based on skill and ability may be assigned as team leads for relevant tasks. Uses hand tools, power tools, machines and ancillary equipment required to perform assigned task. Read and interpret service and manufacturer maintenance manuals, instructions, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data, and other specifications to determine feasibility and method of maintaining and repairing malfunctioning systems, or ancillary equipment. Specific position training and certification requirements may be required by the CNAFINST 4790 and other maintenance instructions.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Maintains and repairs aircraft components including but not limited to flight controls, engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, fuel systems, and mechanical components.
  • Work involves: replacing or repairing worn or damaged components using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment; removing engine from aircraft, using hoist or forklift truck, disassembling and inspecting parts for wear, cracks, security, or other defects, and repairing or replacing defective engine parts and reassembles and installs engine in aircraft.
  • Adjusts, repairs, or replaces electrical wiring system and aircraft accessories, performs preflight, thru-flight, and post-flight maintenance inspections, performs miscellaneous duties to service aircraft, including flushing crankcase, cleaning screens and filters, greasing moving parts, and checking brakes.
  • Applies technical knowledge of airframe and power plant systems in determining equipment malfunctions.
  • Applies required expertise in restoring equipment condition and or operation.
  • Applies comprehensive technical expertise to solve moderate to complex problems by interpreting technical documentation such as blueprints or manufacturers' manuals.
  • Jacking and towing of aircraft and verifies the work was performed satisfactorily, may service engines and airframe components at line station making repairs, short of overhaul, required to keep aircraft in safe operating condition, may specialize in work, repair and modification of structural, precision, and functional spare parts and assemblies, and may specialize in engine repair.
  • May be required to make entries in aircraft logs and records.
  • Prioritizes workload to maintain schedules on assigned projects.
  • Perform other qualified duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of safe working techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to plan and schedule maintenance work requirements.
  • Requires working technical knowledge of aircraft, machinery, facilities, and equipment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude in order to offer technical direction in all maintenance areas.
  • Understand technical language terms in associated field.
  • Ability to interact effectively with personnel at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to use a computer.
  • Must have full knowledge of Navy 4790.2 series and the RDT&E community Knowledge of military publications, drawings, blueprints, microfilm, diagrams, and schematics is mandatory.
  • Knowledge of military and/or company forms required by work requirements.
  • Working knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Possess a valid US State driver's license.
  • Ability to read and interpret data is required.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Ability to obtain a Government flight line driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain a secret security clearance.

Education, Experience and Certifications Required:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Commercial derivative aircraft require A&P certification.
  • Relevant aircraft maintenance repair, inspection, modification, and flight-line operations performance within NAVAIRINST 3710.1(series) or CNAFINST 4790.2 (series) equivalent maintenance systems (not required with Trade, A&P, FAA Certification).
  • Specific experience with the Aircraft Type Model to be supported for the work position (may be waived with submittal of an approved training plan).
  • Demonstrated use of technical publications and guidance.
  • Demonstrated experience with aircraft and equipment logs and records.
  • Mechanical support positions require a broad knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modifications and repair, must have thorough knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, micrometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers.
  • Electrical and Avionic positions must have basic knowledge of electrical theory and thorough knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, indicators, and meters.

Other desired experience:

  • Two years NAWC/ NAVAIR experience. Experience performing functional duties independently. Knowledge of supply/ logistics policies and procedures.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 25-40 pounds with some assistance.
  • CONUS travel may be required from time to time.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions although most of the time is in an office, workstation, shared space, and/or warehouse. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with occasional high volume when aircrafts arrive/depart. Occasional fuel fumes may permeate the workplace. The Hangar environment may be extreme hot and cold during certain seasons of the year.
