Allegheny Wood Products, Inc. – Manager Trainee
Allegheny Wood Products, a leading Appalachian hardwood lumber manufacturer, is looking for a highly motivated candidate for a manager in training position located in southern West Virginia. Manager Trainee position requires learning the entire operation from receiving logs to final shipment of lumber. Assist the site manager with any and all issues concerned with the management of the facility. This is a learning position with the goal of managing a section, department and/or facility. The end goal of this position is the development of an individual ready to take total responsibility for the management of an operation.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
1. Gain a working knowledge of the mill operations, including the mill optimization systems, head rig, edger and sorter adjustment and changes associated with changes in species and lumber thickness
2. Assist with supervision of both AWP employees and AWP contract laborers
a. Enforcement of AWP safety rules and procedures (On a Daily Basis)
b. Assist with and learn about reviewing and approval of employee hours
c. Assist and learn about employee disciplinary actions
3. Learn to complete and maintain the required AWP recordkeeping documentation for employee records and safety/environmental reporting, some of which may be reported to company management, regulatory agencies or third-party consultants.
4. Fill in for shift supervisors when necessary (any shift)
5. Responsible for maintaining housekeeping both inside and outside of the mill
(May include supervision of weekend clean-up crews)
6. Participate in and assist with AWP safety training programs, become an AWP Safety Trainer
7. Work with and learn from the maintenance crews and machine operators to ensure proper operation of the facility. (May include weekend work)
8. May be trained and required to operate rolling stock.
9. Attend and successfully complete an AWP approved NHLA lumber grading course
(Will require time working as a lumber grader)
10. Learn and assist with AWP’s log and lumber inventory system.
(This will include assisting or completing the month-end log and lumber inventories)
11. Learn the AWP bill of lading system and how to properly set-up a load for shipment.
12. Other duties may be assigned.
(As the trainee’s proficiency improves and skill set builds additional responsibilities may be added.)
Reports to the assigned Site Manager
Work Environment/Physical Demands: Use of computer and office equipment. Travel will be required as necessary to complete training, other learning opportunities, skills development or for the supervision and management of the facility. Prolonged periods of standing, setting or walking will be required as related to the demands of the specific task. Must be able to lift or handle 50 lbs.
Minimum Qualifications: Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills and the ability to rely on education, experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Must be a self-starter and motivated to handle management issues as they arise within an authorized framework. Must be able to learn and apply various computerized information systems used in lumber manufacturing. Ability to simultaneously manage several projects. Ability to participate in and facilitate group meetings. Must be able to think strategically and apply the concepts into actionable items, making tough decisions within an authorized framework.Must be willing to relocate as the company’s management needs demand.
Education/Experience: Related Bachelor’s degree. Prior experience in a manufacturing environment a plus. Experience in the lumber or timber industry a plus.
