About the Role: ALM is seeking a full-time data engineer to help leverage public and proprietary industry data in support of its innovative news and information products, including Law.com Radar and Law.com Compass. The successful candidate will join a small but growing cross-functional team spearheading strategic data initiatives within the organization. This position requires a collaborative spirit; a commitment to building robust data systems and good software engineering practices; versatility in using new technologies; and an ability to translate business and editorial objectives into technical requirements.
Responsibilities:
Design and build data pipelines supporting ALM’s ground-breaking algorithmic journalism and business intelligence product suite. This includes working with both NoSQL and SQL database solutions, developing and tuning effective queries, and writing data processing applications in Python
Help identify strategic opportunities in internal and publicly available datasets, including court and legal industry data, by performing exploratory analysis
Work collaboratively with editorial, business, and front- and back-end development teams to build and maintain tools that help democratize access to data-driven insights within the organization and seize on market opportunities
Identify ways to improve existing data processing and management systems and develop workflows for monitoring and integrity checks
Qualifications:
Experience working with both traditional SQL and NoSQL database solutions and knowledge of different data modeling approaches. A background working with XML, XQuery, and/or MarkLogic may be helpful but is not required.
Experience developing in Python in a professional setting, preferably including experience using Python’s pandas library.
Working knowledge of Linux/Unix command-line tools
Experiencing using git for software version control and working with GitHub’s interface
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, preferably in a STEM field or Journalism
Be highly motivated, with a demonstrated aptitude for learning new systems, tools, and programming languages
Have a strong grasp of data fundamentals, including how to model and represent data in a way that aligns with technical and business requirements
Have an interest in journalism and utilizing data to produce valuable insights for an informed audience
Prioritize acting with integrity, possess strong time management skills, and be able to work efficiently with minimal supervision
Have strong written and verbal communication skills and work collaboratively with colleagues
Have an open mind, actively seek out feedback, and take direction and coaching well
