TITLE: Manager, Public Relations and Social Media

REPORTS TO: Senior Director, Marketing & Communications

LOCATION: Remote

STATUS: Full-time, non-exempt, 40 hours per week

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

  • The Manager, Public Relations and Social Media will serve in the overall development and execution of public relations, social media, media relations, and media sponsorship efforts for the ALS Network.
  • Under the supervision of the ALS Network’s Senior Director, Marketing & Communications, the Manager will work in close collaboration with all ALS Network staff. This fast-paced, deadline-driven, and project-oriented position covers a portfolio of activities and events throughout California and Hawaii Hawaii, in support of the organization’s Care Services, research, and advocacy efforts including but not limited to services, programs, educational webinars, events, and development campaigns.
  • The Manager will serve as the organization’s social media lead, overseeing the day-to-day development and management of campaigns and ensuring brand consistency on all social media platforms. Duties include creating and maintaining a social post calendar, developing engaging social content, analyzing engagement data, identifying trends in customer interactions, and planning social/digital campaigns to build the organization’s online presence in partnership with other marcom staff members.
  • The Manager will serve as a lead for the organization’s public relations projects including spearheading earned media relations efforts by generating press releases, filing community calendar listings, creating publicity toolkits, post-event outreach, article curation, and other media relations materials. This position will also manage media relations sponsorships by helping generate pro bono and paid advertising support of the organization’s priority initiatives and events.
  • The Manager will help produce written materials for the general promotion of the ALS Network, to include but not limited to: content for organizational website and event microsites; content for emails, monthly e-newsletters, and social media channels in support of mission priorities and awareness/fundraising efforts on behalf of the ALS community.
  • Using an editorial planner, the Manager will ensure that organizational messaging is timely, on-brand, and also inspires, educates, and mobilizes participants and supporters while conveying the commitment and leadership related to interdependent mission priorities in care services, research, and advocacy. In addition to content creation and deployment, the Manager will monitor message performance on a regular basis and provide reports to department leads and their supervisor.
  • Working with our Director, Data Management, the Manager will document organizational communications and marketing efforts in our constituent relationship management database - Raiser’s Edge NXT. The Manager will also help archive all messaging, performance history, graphics, and other elements on organization servers and systems.
  • Under the direction of their supervisor, the Manager will conduct research into methods and external avenues to increase the visibility of our organization and further our mission; attend community events, respond to information requests, and assist in the development of partnerships with other agencies and organizations.
  • On occasion, the position will require some evening/weekend work and/or occasional overnight travel for in-person event purposes.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, public relations, communications, or a related field.
  • Previous professional experience in communications, social media, media relations, copywriting, and/or graphic design, with at least two years in a corporate communications and/or professional non-profit environment
  • A creative, strategic thinker, with a high degree of initiative, self-motivation, and resourcefulness, who is also a team player who enjoys interaction with professionals, peers, volunteers, and those served by the organization.
  • Demonstrates strong project management skills as well as the ability to prioritize multiple projects/duties when faced with interruptions, fluctuating workload, and conflicting deadlines, and complete them in a timely manner.
  • Commitment to accuracy, excellent attention to detail, highly efficient, and conscientious about follow-up.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, including the ability to prepare and proofread clear, concise, and grammatically correct copy and business correspondence.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and use tact and diplomacy when interfacing with organizational constituents, while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technology tools used for communications, including but not limited to graphics and presentation software, HTML and web development tools,and email distribution programs.
  • Previous experience and knowledge, or a willingness to learn, with social media monitoring and scheduling software, such as Hootsuite, Sprout Social, Coschedule etc
  • Previous experience and knowledge, or a willingness to learn, of video editing to edit short and long-form videos for the ALS Network’s website and social media accounts.
  • Previous experience with social media and traditional media monitoring/management systems like Cision or others.
  • Previous experience and knowledge, or a willingness to learn, of video editing software with the ability to edit short and long-form videos for the ALS Network’s website and social media accounts.
  • Experience with event-day communications, including talking point writing, is preferred.
  • Access to a vehicle, as local travel for events throughout the service area may be required.

RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Work closely with ALS Network staff to establish and execute strategic, cohesive, and effective marketing and communications plans for mission priority promotion and constituent engagement/retention.
  • Maintain ALS Network social media channels and share/create content intended for posting.
  • Write press releases, press release templates and distribute as directed.
  • Develop and maintain media sponsorships with media outlets as directed.
  • Identify media opportunities and amplify ALS Network's media coverage internally and with organizational audiences.
  • Solicit, edit, compile and/or write select content for monthly eNewsletter in collaboration with other marcom staff members.
  • Work with staff and volunteers to develop clear, engaging, and targeted messaging to distribute throughout the year for increased constituent participation in organizational activities and events.
  • Track the efficacy of communications, and publicity efforts through monthly and quarterly reporting.
  • Serve as ongoing quality control over all forward-facing public relations materials and social accounts.
  • Train new and existing staff and leadership volunteers on key communications tools and platforms.
  • Attend select organization activities and events as needed in support of communications/publicity efforts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Moderate and occasional lifting, pushing, pulling, or exerting force of up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular sitting and standing are associated with a normal office environment.
  • Regular reaching with hands and arms.
  • Frequent and repetitive manual dexterity is needed for using a cellphone, tablet, and computer keyboard.
  • Occasionally need to stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • May require some night and weekend work.
