What You Will Contribute To Altos

This position is accountable for performing administrative and technical tasks daily in support of the Acosta-Alvear lab's research and operational needs.Responsibilities include:

  • Manage day-to-day activities within the research laboratory, e.g., ensuring supplies are available for routine experimental procedures and essential equipment is operational.
  • Optimize lab setup and processes for efficient workflows.
  • Act as liaison between the lab and the operations teams, including budget management, fixed asset inventories, purchasing, use of Innovation Hubs, EHS, compliance, and legal/regulatory.
  • Develop laboratory guidelines and SOPs, maintain lab protocol collection, and evaluate new materials and equipment.
  • Place orders and receive items, expense tracking, and budget reviews.
  • Maintain and develop lab collections and databases.
  • Provide oversight of laboratory notebooks.
  • Organize lab meetings in collaboration with lab group.
  • Oversee wet lab space and Bio Safety Level 2 tissue culture room cleanliness and readiness, e.g., monitor and execute incubator sterilization, Bio Safety Cabinet cleaning, medical waste disposal, stocking of common-use materials, and adherence to sterile work guidelines where applicable.
  • Train incoming personnel in proper lab conduct (onboarding). May train others in technical areas and complex processes, according to expertise.
  • Collect data and materials from exiting lab personnel and conduct the exit interview (offboarding).
  • Participate in essential wet-lab activities (learning or with experience), as defined by the needs of the scientists and with PI approval.
  • Prepare media and stock solutions as needed.
  • Use the autoclave and dishwasher as needed.
  • Grow, expand, and bank cells from Altos's cell repository (expand and maintain lab working stocks).
  • Carry out molecular and cell biology techniques as part of ongoing projects in the lab.
Who You Are
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • 2 years of lab management experience, along with a genuine desire to support and improve the administrative practices of the lab.
  • Impeccable organizational skills with strong attention to detail and highly accurate work products.
  • Computer skills, including proficiency with the Mac platform, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Workplace, scheduling and communication apps (Slack, Monday, Trello), with the ability to learn new software applications.
  • Relevant experience with basic molecular and cellular biology experimental techniques (see preferred qualifications).
  • Solid understanding of underlying scientific principles and demonstrated ability to learn new laboratory techniques.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to interact effectively with a wide variety of people at all levels.
  • Ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a diverse population.
  • Ability to use good judgment in responding to inquiries.
  • Ability to keep accurate records of work performed via electronic notebooks.
  • Actively seek opportunities to increase skills and expertise.
  • Ability to be a team player who can work well both as part of a large group and independently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in a relevant field
  • Experience with cell culture and cell engineering, such as cancer/immortalized cell lines, iPSCs, and organoids.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques, such as cloning, DNA/RNA extractions, plasmid purifications, qPCR, Western Blot, flow cytometry, and immunofluorescence.

The salary range forRedwood City, CA:

  • Lab Manager I: $130,050 - $175,950
  • Lab Manager II: $143,650 - $194,350
