POSITION OVERVIEW AND PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS):

This is a seasonal position who works with our Senior Forestry staff and reports to the VP of Lands & Natural Resources and will provide exposure to forestry management on Afognak Island. This includes timber sale contract administration, reforestation practices and management, and forest stand and habitat improvement.

Working with the Senior Forestry personnel on Afognak Island to learn about the following:

  • Timber sale preparation
  • Layout of road and cutting units
  • On the ground location of riparian fish retention zones
  • Fieldwork required for successful resource management and data collection for the following:
    • Timberland Improvement
    • Wilderness Protection
    • Habitat Enhancement
    • Timber Sales
    • Monitoring forest use and enforcing regulations
  • Forest stand improvement operations, slash treatment, and pre-commercial thinning and inspections
  • Tree planting, inspections, and reforestation compliance activities
  • Brush clearing and road / bridge construction and maintenance
  • Regeneration and stocking surveys
  • Road and fish stream buffer layout
  • Performing basic equipment maintenance
  • Data collection using handheld GPS to collect bridge/culvert data
  • Collecting aerial imagery using drones
  • Incorporating aerial imagery and GPS data into ArcMap
  • Using ArcMap to create boundaries of cutting units to determine acreage for planting
  • Boundary layout of planting and thinning units using handheld GPS
  • Maintaining, repairing, and reporting on all camp infrastructure components required to accomplish annual work plans and maintain a safe and comfortable living space
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Valid Alaska state driver’s license
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word & Excel
  • Ability to live and work in a remote environment for extended periods of time
  • Ability to cook and clean for own personal needs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some post-secondary education in forestry or natural resource management
  • Experience working at a remote work site
